The wait is almost over. Yellowstone spinoff Marshals will premiere this Sunday, March 1st on CBS, and it of course stars Luke Grimes, better known to Yellowstone fans as Kayce Dutton, in a new chapter after moving on from the Yellowstone Ranch.
The synopsis of the show’s first season, which will consist of 13 episodes, seemingly finds Kayce Dutton getting back to his violent ways because of a devastating loss that he suffered:
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”’
Just in case you haven’t seen any of the trailers… all signs are pointing towards Kayce Dutton joining the U.S. Marshals because he loses his wife, Monica (played by Kelsey Asbille), which many Yellowstone fans are probably happy about.
CBS dropped a secondary trailer yesterday that sets the stage for how action-packed this series will be. And it appears to give us a little bit of insight as to how Kayce got back to his violent ways. A scene shows Kayce first telling his son, Tate, that he thinks it will be quiet working at the Marshal’s office, but quickly proves that theory to be wrong. Kayce is later heard saying:
“I sold the ranch thinking I was choosing the best path for my family. No matter where I go, I end up on the wrong side of the fence.”
And in another scene, someone is heard saying that violence “has a way of finding the Duttons.”
In many other scenes in the secondary trailer, Kayce engages in violent acts, including blowing up motorcycles, searching livestock trailers, placing spike strips on the highway, scouting enemies across expansive terrain, and blowing up more buildings.
While Kayce joined the Marshal’s office for good, it appears that he might get some emotion involved, leading him to not always play by the rules. Rounding out the trailer, Thomas Rainwater tells Kayce that he needs to avoid confusing vengeance with closure, because only one of those brings peace. Kayce, without hesitation, responds with what he’s choosing, and later says that he fights to win, which does not mean it’s always clean.
“At least vengeance is something I believe in… I don’t fight clean. I fight to win.”
It’s going to be fun to watch it all unfold, and country fans will probably be excited to see Riley Green on their screens in some of the episodes, and during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Grimes revealed more about the series, saying it’s going to be “very different” than Yellowstone, adding that it will be action-packed and a much “quicker pace”:
“It’s a very different show, it’s a lot quicker pace, there’s a lot of action in the show.”
Towards the end of the Yellowstone series, a common complaint among fans (myself included) was that it started to drag, and there would be several episodes that went by where it felt nothing happened or there was just a lot of filler.
I think there were plenty of reasons for that, but hopefully this new spinoff will provide what started to lack in the original series while still being its own, new show, and Grimes says he hopes the “original fans” will still like Marshals:
“I hope you like it, that’s what I would say. I hope the original fans will still like it.”
Kayce was one of my favorite characters on the show, and so I can’t wait to see what they do with this new spinoff and I’ll personally just be excited to see him on my screen again.
