USA! USA! USA!
Ladies and gentlemen, the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina are in full swing, and if you aren’t watching, there’s something wrong with you (sorry, not sorry). The Summer Olympics always get the majority of the hype, but I’d argue that the Winter Olympics are just as good – if not better.
World class athletes fly through the air with snowboards and skis clipped to their feet, people lay down on a sled and rocket down a track made of ice, and most importantly, regular looking individuals (who are actually extremely talented) slowly push stones and scrub ice in what could be Earth’s greatest sport.
Curling.
You don’t have to fully understand the olympic event to enjoy it. All you need to know is that the United States has a Mixed Doubles team that is currently on a heater, and they now have a chance to win gold for America. If you aren’t familiar with the names Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin, you better get to know them.
The team have put USA and the sport of curling on their backs, and they’ll soon be playing in the gold-medal match thanks to an electric moment they provided in their semi-final match against Italy. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that they are both named Cory/Korey. That has to make for good team chemistry, eh?
Thiesse and Dropkin got down early against the defending gold medalists, but they quickly got back in contention in an action-packed match (yes, curling has action). And it all came down to the last shot of the contest, where the curling stone was in the hand of Thiesse.
A perfect shot from her, along with some expert guiding from Dropkin, knocked Italy’s center stone away and pushed another of Italy’s stones towards the outer portion of the house (curling target). It was basically a buzzer-beater stone, and ultimately gave Team USA a 9-8 victory.
And it was simply electric:
Yes, I do believe in miracles… I’m an American.
Now, the mixed doubles team of Thiesse and Dropkin will take on Sweden in the Gold-Medal Match on Tuesday at 12:05 EST. By making it to the final, they’ve secured a medal for Team USA… though they’ll look to continue their underdog story and win gold. Regardless, it’ll be only the third ever time that USA wins a medal in Curling, and the first time they’ll medal in Mixed Curling.
American Winter Olympics fans aren’t entirely sure what’s going on, but they are loving it:
Not really a miracle a pretty routine shot actually (I learned about curling 3 days ago)
