One of the most intriguing parts about the college football bowl season, are the obscure traditions each bowl has.
For example, Clemson football received 4,000 boxes of Cheez-Its for winning the Cheez-It Bowl, and Wyoming won a ton of free potatoes for winning the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (not a bad haul to be honest…).
However, one bowl in particular has one of the wildest, or most disgusting, traditions…
The Duke’s Mayonnaise Bowl.
The South Carolina Gamecocks squared off against the North Carolina Tar Heels today in Charlotte, North Carolina for the Mayo Bowl, ending with USC defeating the Tar Heels 38-21.
The win was a monumental one for the Gamecocks, as first year head coach Shane Beamer capped off a 7-6 winning record in his first year.
And of course, Duke’s Mayonnaise had a special surprise for Beamer…
Before the game started Beamer and UNC coach Mack Brown were asked how they’d react if either won the game, and got a tub full of mayo dumped on them.
Beamer responded:
“I’m not a big mayonnaise guy. I mean, I’ll gladly take one for the team on that one if it means we won a football game, but woof.”
Brown responded:
“If we won a game, I’d let someone hit me in the face with a frying pan… I don’t care.”
Of course, Beamer got the W, so he had to gut it out and get doused with mayo…
Shoulda wore a helmet…
Not gonna lie, that one looked like it kinda hurt. Duke’s needs to get someone that can properly dumb a bucket a mayo on someone’s head without sending them to the ER.
Is under Coach under concussion protocol after that? The internet is dying to know…
