You can tell that this mother bear really needed this.
This mama bear and her cub took “making yourself at home” to a whole other level. An Asheville, North Carolina homeowner had gotten used to seeing a black bear and her kiddo utilize her back porch. However, she never expected that the mother would figure out how to use one of her patio chairs.
Shirley Whisnant had been keeping tabs on the black bear and her cub for quite some time. They’d often visit the back yard of her home, and it had become very normal (and almost predictable) for them to relax on the tile of her porch. But at one point – whether through exploration or observation – the mama decided she’d try taking a load off by plopping down in a chair.
From what we can see in this video, the black bear was a huge fan… and finally understood what all of the fuss was about.
The North Carolina homeowner couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw the mother sitting just like a human – with her arm on the armrest and her foot propped up – in the patio furniture. She made sure to get her phone out to get it on camera, and it’s a good thing she did, because I don’t know if anyone would have believed her without video evidence.
While the mom nursed her cub, Whisnant described the scene, and it all made for quite the viral video:
“Mama has found her favorite chair. She has her foot up, her baby is in her lap nursing. This is so adorable. She usually sits over the ground, but now she’s decided that a chair is certainly more comfortable.”

I can’t help but feel happy for the mother bear for finding a spot to relax while nursing her little one. It seems like much of the rest of social media is in agreement. Wild animals deserve a little peace and quiet too, and this mama has evidently found her happy place… and knows how nice it can be to kick your feet up and stay a while.
