You just have to read between the lines.
Megan Moroney is having a heck of a year, after scoring her first ever #1 album on the Billboard Top 200 chart with her third studio album, Cloud 9, earlier this year. Of course, she first burst onto the scene four years ago with her song “Tennessee Orange,” and since then, she’s had hits like “6 Months Later,”
During an interview with Willie Geist for TODAY, Moroney opened up about how much her fame has grown and what it’s been like navigating balancing her personal life with what she reveals to the public.
Megan says there were plenty of nights she would cry herself to sleep because she “felt so misunderstood” and wanted to just “tell people everything:”
“There were definitely nights I would cry myself to sleep, because I felt so misunderstood, and I wanted to tell people everything.”
Honestly, I can understand how it would be hard not to speak on some things that get said about you in the media that aren’t true, or are misrepresented, and Megan says it’s been a learning process.
At the end of the day, Megan is an artist, and putting her thoughts and feelings into her music is her therapy, so she says she’s learned how to tell some of her personal life without telling it all, using the fan-favorite song “Who Hurt You?” as an example:
“Just who I am, trying to find the balance of not telling everyone my entire personal life, but like also letting people know like this is how I feel. For example, there’s this song on my new album, ‘Who Hurt You?’, I purposely wrote it so that people wouldn’t ask me questions about it.
If you listen to the song and you still have questions like I got no answers for you.”
It’s no secret at this point that the major running theory, and probably the accurate theory, is that she wrote the song about whatever went wrong with fellow country star Riley Green. The two were spotted hanging out in Nashville and in his hometown of Jacksonville, Alabama, and the song pretty much revealed how everything went down from her perspective. Megan sings about how “the devil went down to Georgia, then he crossed the Bama line,” which is very telling right from the start.
Then, she goes onto reference “hometown happy hours” and “hand-delivered flowers,” explaining that she “tried to run” while it was still a fun fling, alleging it was the man who “cosplayed someone with feelings” and convinced her to stay.
I think Megan’s willingness to really go there in her music is part of what makes fans so intrigued by it… she doesn’t hold back, she actually reveals a lot about her personal life even if it isn’t always so explicit in terms of details, and that’s something people can relate to. It’s also just fun to hear about people’s personal lives and know you’re not the only one going through it, which is why Megan refers to her live shows as “group therapy.”
Megan has previously said she’s not writing for her next album until she wraps up this Cloud 9 tour, which is headed to Europe soon, but I’m sure whenever the next record comes, there will be even more for fans to dissect and scream along to.
