A collaboration I didn’t see coming.
It’s safe to say that Treaty Oak Revival is one of the buzziest bands in the genre right now. Riding the continued highs of their 2023 breakout album, Have A Nice Day, the West Texas band proved once again why they’re one of the hottest bands in the ever-growing Texas country/southern rock scene last November with the release of their third studio album, West Texas Degenerate.
Following West Texas Degenerate’s release, Treaty Oak scored their first #1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums and Americana/Folk Albums charts, marking their first #1 album on any Billboard album chart. Additionally, it also debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart, #3 on Top Country Albums chart, #21 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart, and #30 on Top Billboard Canadian Albums, with each previously unreleased song taking over the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart.
Of course, the album was another stellar outing from the band, boosted by an all-star cast of features ranging from the likes of Muscadine Bloodline and William Clark Green to Gannon Fremin & CCREV. Today, Treaty Oak is back, this time being featured on an incredibly interesting side project from rising star, Dylan Marlowe.
Marlowe, who has scored hits on country radio with tracks like “Boys Back Home” and “Record High,” turned heads last Tuesday by teasing a new side project called 80 Acres. Taking to Instagram to post himself and his bandmates in a barn with a crudely-drawn flag that displayed the band’s name, Marlowe would simply caption the post with five question marks.
Immediately after the initial Instagram post from Marlowe and 80 Acres went out, Treaty Oak would join in on the fun, taking to Instagram themselves to post another flag, this time reading:
“WTF IS 80 ACRES.”
After multiple teaser videos from 80 Acres, it became increasingly clear that it served as Marlowe’s side project that was exploring an alternative/grunge sound extremely similar to Treaty Oak’s very own. As the “EMPTYHANDED” singer explained in an Instagram video discussing the project, 80 Acres is a project that let him explore different sounds and styles that weren’t constrained by the expectations of country radio and genre conventions as a whole.
“‘What is 80 Acres? I don’t know. ‘What genre is 80 Acres?’ I still have no idea. It would be pointless to put it inside a box what 80 Acres is. This project is a collection of songs that have no boundaries. There’s no time limit. When I wrote these songs, they were creatively free. There was no outside agenda on ‘Is this song gonna be a radio hit or not? Is this song [taking] too long to get to the chorus?’ This project is everything but down the middle, everything by the standard way of doing things.”
They would confirm this notion last Thursday by announcing their first self-titled EP, featuring five songs and a feature from the West Texas Degenerates on the fourth track, “Mess We Made.”
As for “Mess We Made” itself, it’s everything you’d expect from a Treaty Oak collaboration with Marlowe on a project of this type. Feeling incredibly reminiscent of early 2000s pop-punk bands like All Time Low, Blink-182, All American Rejects and more, it’s an incredibly infectious track.
Of course, it’s far from anything resembling country, but that’s clearly not the point of this song and project as a whole. If you’re a fan of Treaty Oak’s style, or any of the Texas country rock acts, and the aforementioned era of pop-punk, you’ll find a lot of enjoyment out of both “Mess We Made” and 80 Acres.
