The best of both world’s as Megan Moroney covers a Hannah Montana classic. In case you haven’t heard, Miley Cyrus is gearing up to star in the “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special,” which will arrive on Disney+ tomorrow, March 24th, and in case you’re unaware, it’s kind of a big deal… “Hannah Montana” was a staple of my childhood (though I admit, I was much more of a “Lizzie McGuire” girl), so I will be tuning in for sure.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since Miley Cyrus introduced the world to Hannah Montana, and in honor of the anniversary, Spotify and Disney have teamed up to give new life to some of the fan-favorite songs, and Megan got the most iconic one of all, as her rendition of “The Best of Both Worlds” was released today as an official Spotify Single.
Megan grew up watching the show, and she has been playing this song in particular for the last couple years before she walks out onstage at her own concerts, so it was a full-circle moment for her to be part of this whole thing.
She told People that she knew she couldn’t “piss off Hannah Montana fans” because this is the signature song and as fans know, the theme song that played before every episode:
“This is like, ‘the’ Hannah Montana song and I can’t piss off Hannah Montana fans.”
Megan called it her “ultimate hype track,” adding that she dreamed up growing up to be Hannah Montana, and in a way, I think she’s definitely made that dream come true:
“I started watching and listening to Hannah Montana at a young age. So I think just her confidence… She was bubbly and funny. I think that definitely wore off on me. I didn’t grow up and like, want to be a princess. I wanted to grow up and be Hannah Montana.”
Megan’s cover is very true to the original, and I think a lot of her fans are probably also Hannah Montana fans, so they should certainly enjoy getting to listen to this song and see Megan be part of this very important anniversary.
And in addition to Megan lending her voice for the aforementioned cover, it sounds like we also have the queen herself, Mrs. Dolly Parton, to thank for this special happening too. In a feature for Variety, Miley revealed that it was one of Dolly’s life philosophies that led to the upcoming 20th Anniversary Special, which is to simply promote whatever it is you want to happen before it even exists. That means “no one can say no”:
“I learned this terrible habit — but I actually think it was good advice — from Dolly. She told me that if you want something to happen, promote it before it exists. Then no one can say no.”
It’s certainly worked for Dolly all of these years, and it worked for Miley this time too, because it was her who planted this idea in the heads of Disney executives and basically willed it to happen, telling them it would be “huge”:
“So I just started promoting a Hannah Montana 20th-anniversary special that literally did not exist.”
Miley says she knows what kind of impact the show had on so many people, and it’s still part of her daily life, because fans will still bring her “Hannah Montana” merch and ask if there’s any possibility for another season:
“It’s not just a TV show. I see daily how important Hannah is to people,” said Cyrus. “When I travel, people bring me ‘Hannah’ merch. They ask, ‘Are you ever going to do another season?’”
Dolly was a recurring guest star on the show, playing the role of Aunt Dolly, Miley Stewart’s godmother… so she basically just played herself and we saw their real life relationship on screen. It’s unclear if she will be involved in this special to, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see her pop up.
