The internet is so predictable sometimes…
President Donald Trump called the Team USA men’s hockey team immediately after winning the gold medal today – and of course, people found something to be upset about after the video of the call began making its rounds.
Yesterday was one of the best sports days on the internet in a long time, after Team USA pulled the upset over Team Canada to take home the gold medal in men’s hockey, after the USA also took gold over Canada in women’s hockey earlier in the winter Olympics.
The Canadians had Team USA on their heels for most of the game, but a lights out performance from goalie Connor Hellebuyck helped the Americans send the game into overtime. And during 3-on-3, Jack Hughes became an American hero by scoring the game winner after losing two teeth earlier in the game.
Just an incredible effort from this group all the way around to bring home the gold medal in hockey for the first time in 46 years.
After the game, FBI Director Kash Patel was even celebrating with the team in the locker room, throwing back beers after being invited by the boys to join the party.
What a scene.
Well while Kash was celebrating with the team, he dialed up President Donald Trump, who congratulated them on their win and even invited them to the State of the Union address this week:
“I just told my people, two minutes ago, I didn’t know they’d be calling, I said, ‘We’re giving the State of the Union speech on Tuesday night.’ I can send a military plane or something, but if you would like to, it’s the coolest night, it’s the biggest speech.”
The team cut the president off to tell him that they were all in, and Trump assured them that he would make sure they would be there:
“The nice thing about being president is, I can tell you, you don’t have to worry about the weather or landing…
If you could work that out, I’d be happy to have you.”
But it was the president’s comments about the women’s team during the call – and the reaction from the men’s team – that has people upset.
While extending the invitation to the State of the Union, the president joked that he would also be inviting the women’s team because he would be “impeached” if he didn’t:
“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that. I do believe I probably would be impeached.”
The team got a kick out of the joke – which apparently has the internet mad at them for laughing.
I’m mad that he and the players laughed at the women’s team. Otherwise totally cool to talk to the president.

Of course people have to find something to be upset about. But at least most people can see that it was nothing more than a lighthearted moment after a big win for the team and for our country.
