Larry Fleet has a gift when it comes to releasing songs right when the world needs them, and we could probably use some more songs like this. During the crazy, lockdown year of 2020, the country music artist released “Where I Find God.” And now, in 2026, Fleet looked around at the current state of the world and knew the time was right to release “Both Sides of the Fence.”
One could categorize this new track as political… but not in an “adding fuel to the fire” kind of way. Fleet is inviting listeners to take a step back, take a deep breath, and realize that at the core of it all, we’re all just people. Sure, we might look at certain things from a different perspective, or not agree on what’s good and what’s not. But at the end of the day, we can all get along and appreciate one another.
Or as Larry Fleet elegantly puts it in the first verse of his new song, things can make sense on both sides of the fence:
“My daddy voted for Carter, and Momma voted for Reagan
My sister jammed Dolly Parton, my brother loved Van Halen
Somehow it all made sense
On both sides of the fence.”
Once the track gets to the chorus, it hammers home the idea that picking sides and standing strong with one political party can only lead to separation. Fleet suggests that when a situation seems to be black and white, we can all choose to just see it as grey and move right along. Of course, in today’s hyper-militant political divide, playing it down the middle just gets you condemned by both sides.
It’s overall an encouraging message throughout “Both Sides of the Fence,” and especially so in the track’s chorus:
“I have a hard time with hard lines, and picking one side or the other
Sometimes when it’s black and white, grey’s my favorite color
I’ll give you my opinion, but it ain’t worth two cents
If you ask me, the grass is pretty green
On both sides of the fence.”
Penning a song that touches on politics can be a slippery slope, especially in an age when nuance is a lost art, but Larry Fleet manages to tackle the tall task with grace, and without pointing fingers. That’s not only refreshing… it’s a testament to the stellar songwriting of Alex Kline, Brent Rupard, and Chris DuBios, who are all listed as lyricists on the track.
My favorite portion of the song comes towards the end in the track’s bridge, and it’s where Larry Fleet finally reveals where he stands politically:
“I’m just a free spirit, man
And if you’re wondering where I stand
It’s right here, holdin’ this cold beer in my hand.”
Hell yes… there’s a lot of political divisiveness in the modern day United States and here, Larry Fleet does his part to try and bring people together. Check it out:
