It sounds like the Super Bowl could be coming to Music City sooner rather than later.
Once the new Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee is complete in 2027, the city will be an immediate contender for some of the world’s biggest events. The enclosed stadium itself will be located on the East Bank of Nashville, close to where the existing Nissan Stadium stands. It will be a 1.75 million square feet facility, and will be locked in for a lease of 30 years, meaning that the Titans aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
The stadium was designed by Manica Architecture, which has previously designed other sports arenas such as Allegiant Stadium, NRG Stadium, and Wembley Stadium. The Titans’ new home will be able to house 55,000 to 60,000 people (which is smaller than their current stadium), and though the Titans went through with the project to refresh their home, it was also done in hopes of bringing in hosting opportunities for other sporting events like the NCAA Final Four and, of course, the Super Bowl.
Based upon recent comments from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, it won’t be too long before Nashville and the sidewalks of Broadway are packed with football fans attending the Super Bowl.
The state of Tennessee has never hosted a Super Bowl, despite the Titans being established in Nashville since 1997. But the new stadium could be the push that Music City needed to be ready to host the “Big Game.” Roger Goodell was recently in Nashville for the Tennessee Titans Steel Topping Out Ceremony, which in layman’s terms just means that the stadium that’s being built reached a significant construction milestone.
While Goodell was in Nashville, he had this to say about the city and the possibility of Tennessee hosting it’s first ever Super Bowl:
“The work that they’ve done here from the moment you had the draft and what you’ve done to change the trajectory of the draft ― you actually took the draft and you made it yours, but you did it in a way that was incredibly impactful to the NFL and the Titans ― and I think all of us at that moment had the wake-up moment that this is a Super Bowl-ready city. The one thing that’s missing is the stage. I think now we’re building a great stage. We have a process, but now I have every expectation you’re going to see that type of thing in the future.”
So no official confirmation that Tennessee will get a Super Bowl, but about as close to a confirmation as you can get from the NFL commissioner.
The NFL draft that was held in Nashville in 2019 – which ruined a lot of bachelorette parties – was a booming success for the city and the league. Plus, Music City’s central-ish location in the United States make it a very popular spot for companies to set up shop. Oracle and In-N-Out Burger have both recently re-located to the Nashville area.
All that to say that a lot of people are starting to believe in Nashville, and Roger Goodell also pointed that out as a reason why the Super Bowl will soon be hosted by the home of Tennessee Titans:
“We believe in (Nashville). And I think you’re starting to believe in yourself.”
Though the stadium is set to open in 2027, the earliest that Nashville could be given Super Bowl hosting duties is 2029. Santa Clara, California has been tapped to host in 2026, followed by Los Angeles, California in 2027. Atlanta, Georgia is then the Super Bowl host city for 2028.
2029 and beyond is wide open, and it’d be hard to think that Nashville would be passed up for 2029 or 2030 with how Roger Goodell talked up the destination as Super Bowl-ready.
