Country Fans Think Megan Moroney References Riley Green’s “Make It Rain” In “Cloud 9” Teaser

Megan Moroney

The pink era is officially here.

Megan Moroney announced her third studio record, Cloud 9, this morning, and fans are blushing thinking about what’s in store for the pink album.

“It’s a long way down. MY NEW ALBUM CLOUD 9 IS OUT FEBRUARY 20TH!!! Pre-order + pre-save available now at meganmoroney.com.”

Some Megan Moroney fans were on the nose and speculated that she would name her record Cloud 9 after picking up on her references to clouds in many of her recent Instagram posts, along with the number nine. While Megan Moroney fans were on the nose picking up those Easter Eggs ahead of the record’s announcement, everyone was thrown off on what color this era would be, with many convinced it would be butter yellow.

Moroney says she can’t wait to start a new chapter in her music career, and adds that these songs were written by the “strongest, most confident version” of her:

“I am so excited for my fans and I to dive into this new world of Cloud 9 together. Similar to the first two albums, it’s all written about honest, personal experiences, but these songs were written by the strongest, most confident version of myself I’ve ever been.

My feet feel firmly planted in my artistry and it was fun to play around sonically, while still sticking to my roots of what my fans and I love. ‘Cloud 9’ is a state of mind, and I have no doubt this will be the best chapter yet.”

While Moroney has not yet revealed the full tracklist, she’s shared that “Beautiful Things” and “6 Months Later” will appear on the record, along with the title track “Cloud 9.”

Before announcing the album, Moroney had a lock on her website, and if fans guessed the password correctly, they were given a teaser of a new song, which one might assume is “Cloud 9.” With the same visual as her closing out her blue era, opening a window that reveals pink, a clip of the window opening highlights her voice echoing in the background as she sings:

“It’s all sunshine
And blue skies
But I can also make it rain”

It’s a solid little teaser that plays perfectly into the album art visuals, highlighting weather-related lyrics that depict Cloud 9.

However, it did not take long for country fans to read into the lyrics, and many began to question if the line about making it rain references another country music star… Riley Green. Country fans are speculating that it references his tune “Make It Rain,” which appeared on the deluxe edition of Don’t Mind If I Do.

A Megan Moroney fan account linked the two songs, highlighting Green’s lyrics about breaking down a past lover and the many tears involved in the relationship.

“I can make it rain
I can make her tears fall down…”

The clip then goes to Moroney’s teaser for “Cloud 9,” where she sings about the changing weather patterns (emotional swings) of her life: it’s sunshine and rainbows some days, but she can “also make it rain.”

If you’ve paid any attention to the country music rumor mill, you’re probably familiar with the speculation earlier this year that Megan Moroney and Riley Green were an item. But if you haven’t, here’s a quick-and-dirty rundown of what you need to know.

After Ella Langley and Riley Green released their two duets, “You Look Like You Love Me” and “Don’t Mind If I Do,” many fans thought that they were an item, until Megan Moroney was allegedly seen in Riley Green’s hometown with him. Then the narrative shifted to Riley Green dating Megan Moroney.

At the start of 2025, fans began to speculate that Green was romantically involved with Megan Moroney after it appeared the two were in St. Barts together. Megan confirmed they had hung out while on vacation, but clarified that just being around each other does not mean it was with romantic intentions.

“He was individually on his vacation with his friends. St. Barts is a popular place! It’s one of those things where if you know someone on a small island, you’re like, ‘Oh, sh*t, you’re here too.’ So it was fun. Just because we’re hanging out doesn’t mean we’re romantically dating. You know what I mean?”

But again, fans were not buying it and still speculate they are involved after being spotted together in Riley Green’s hometown.

However, if anything was going on in this love triangle, Riley Green fumbled both of these women, and it appears it could have ended badly when Megan Moroney mouthed to a fan during a concert that “he f’ed up.”

Now it appears that country fans are obsessed with pitting Ella Langley and Megan Moroney against each other, as if there is bad blood between the two women because of what (allegedly) went down involving Riley Green. Of course, all of this is online chatter and speculation and has not been confirmed nor denied by any party. But in short, that’s what you need to know.

So back to “Make It Rain” and “Cloud 9.”

While the lyrics are very similar and there’s no denying that, I personally think this is a stretch. I think Moroney is clearly referencing weather changes, given the album’s title, and is having fun with that wordplay related to the clouds. Could the “rain” be referring to the turmoil of a previous relationship? Of course. Megan Moroney has never been afraid to admit that she draws inspiration from her real life, which makes her songs so relatable, but that does not mean the relationship in question was with Riley Green.

I think it’s time to put all of these speculations and rumors to bed… If Ella, Riley, and Megan have not addressed it at this point, aside from confirming that they are single… what’s the use of continually bringing it up?
