Just in the nick of time.
There might not be a force in the entire universe more powerful than a mother’s love and drive to protect her offspring. Motherly instincts are 100% real, and they were on full display in this video of a mother deer rushing in to save the life of her baby at the very last second.
At first, it looked like the small fox and the even smaller fawn were just playing an innocent game of tag. For those that are used to seeing wildlife through the lens of Disney movies and other animated films, you would have just thought that these two little animals were friends, and playfully rough housing.
But this isn’t Bambi… this is real life, and what was going down was far from innocent.
The fox was undoubtedly trying to make a meal out of the baby deer. Foxes are omnivores, so they’ll just as easily eat vegetation as they will prey… but they definitely aren’t going to pass up on the opportunity to take down a defenseless, singled-out fawn.
That being said, this fawn held its own for quite some time. The youngling did a great job of keeping the fox in front of it, and stomping its legs to try and scare the predator away. Eventually, the fawn lost the angle that it had on the fox, and the sharp-toothed, long-tailed animal pounced.
The fawn was in big time trouble as the fox started to get the upper hand. But the baby deer wasn’t going to go down without a fight, and made sure to send out a distress signal to its mother that was in the nearby woods. There’s a good chance the doe had no idea her fawn had walked off. Though once she heard the cries of the fawn, she came running and was ready to unleash those “mother powers” on the animal attacking her little one.
In buzzer-beater fashion, the mother deer ran in to save the day, and I don’t think the fawn could have afforded to wait much longer. It certainly seemed like the fox was about to turn the lights out on the baby deer, and fortunately, it immediately retreated when it saw the much larger mother running down the hill.
The fawn then popped right up off the ground and ran to its mama, and all seemed well. The mother checked on her little one, and then stomped and kept an eye out as the fawn stayed close. It definitely learned its lesson to not stray too far away from its mother.

Talk about a close call.
You hate to see footage of a little baby animal in distress, but you love to see a mother swoop in to save the day. Though people online were pretty upset about the fox attacking the fawn, that’s just the Animal Kingdom for you. A fox has to eat too, and it had its eyes set on the baby deer.
The mother deer had other plans though, and people commended the mom’s rescue in the comments below the post:

I would have loved to see a video of that, to be honest.
