Black Bear Gets Chased Off By A Pack Of Coyotes In A Walmart Parking Lot

Just another reason to avoid Walmart, if you ask me.

You never know what to expect when it comes to the outdoors. The only thing you can really assume is that wild animal things will happen out in the wild. But even that’s not a fool-proof assumption, and if you need proof, just take a look at this video of a bear getting cornered by a pack of coyotes in a Walmart parking lot.

Most of the time, animals like bears and coyotes won’t bother wandering into public, urban areas. They prefer the comforts of their own habitat, and as the old saying goes, they are generally more scared of humans than humans are of them. However, sometimes when buildings go up close to where they live, construction disrupts their habitat, or the animals get hungry (and desperate), they’ll push their own boundaries and appear in places that are more fit for the human population.

That’s especially true for coyotes.

Coyotes, whether we like it or not, are thriving across the United States. The canines have an innate ability to survive in all different types of climates and habitats, which has unfortunately caused some to settle into more urban areas. They typically prefer more rural settings, but they’ll do just about anything to satiate their hunger. Coyotes, though small in stature, are predators and scavengers that will hunt and scavenge anything they can get their teeth around.

So when this pack of coyotes in Port Coquitlam, which is essentially a Canadian suburb of metro Vancouver, British Columbia, set their eyes on a black bear, it didn’t matter where they had chase the potential meal to get it. That’s why the chase inexplicably led the bear and the group of canines to a parking lot outside of a Walmart.

Someone captured this all on camera from the safety of their vehicle, which is pretty concerning if you ask me. Neither the bear nor the coyotes were intimidated by the car that was driving nearby. Add that to the fact that they were seemingly comfortable trotting around the well-lit area near the Walmart, in a relatively urban area, and you’ve got yourself a potential public safety concern for those living in Port Coquitlam. Of course, the area is no stranger to black bears… British Columbia has more than 120,000 black bears in the province.

Check it out:

“Nature comes to the city as a bear makes great escape from a pack of coyotes in a Walmart parking lot.”

That’s one of the wilder animal chases that I’ve ever seen. The backdrop of that should be a wall of mountains… not the Walmart.

The good news is that the bear apparently got away from the hungry coyotes. Whoever it was that captured the video shared that the canines lost interest in the chase at one point, and the bear was able to get away. Not that the coyotes would every really stand a chance against a bear. Still though… a chase like that isn’t something you see everyday, and certainly not one that usually takes place in the parking lot of a superstore.

That being said, any Walmart that I’ve ever been to is typically quite the wild place. Not in the sense of “wild animals running around,” but to be honest with you… a bear running from coyotes near the Walmart could just mean that the craziness of the superstore is slowly seeping outside of the building and into their parking lots.
