Not quite…
We probably all know somebody with “face blindness.” Sometimes I think I may be that guy in my friend group, because I’m constantly forgetting names and not recognizing people. (It’s especially tough living in Nashville knowing that you probably wouldn’t recognize a celebrity walking right by you).
Well apparently Travis Kelce has a case of face blindness too, which led to a hilarious mix-up when he met a musical legend.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end was recently in Los Angeles with his brother, Jason Kelce, for a live taping of their New Heights podcast. And during the audience Q&A, the brothers were asked which embarrassing story they would permanently ban their sibling from telling about them.
While Jason says that he’s not easily embarrassed and didn’t have an answer (because he usually shares all of his embarrassing stories himself), Travis recalled one story in particular that his brother likes to bring up.
According to Mr. Taylor Swift, he was attending a music festival in the Hamptons:
“I go with a bunch of guys from New York, in the money world, so it’s a connection in like finances and I’m thinking that I’m going to be around a bunch of guys in finances at this music festival.”
Unsurprisingly, Kelce admits that once he got to the festival, he immediately started drinking:
“It’s kind of the Kelce way of going about things. And I get sh–faced. Don’t even really know who’s performing at the concert, I’m just kinda up there like, ‘Hey, you got any more tequila?'”
Well along the way, somebody told Kelce that “Buffett” was there – and instead of legendary “Margaritaville” singer Jimmy Buffett, his mind immediately went to…billionaire Berkshire Hathaway chairman Warren Buffett.
Classic mixup.
Kelce said he was “way too hammered” to meet Buffett and “start talking finances,” but after chugging some water to sober up, things seemed to be going well as he spoke to who he thought was a billionaire investor:
“Man, we have the best conversation I’ve ever had in my life. The man is literally smiling from ear to ear, I’m thinking, ‘I’m going to be rich here soon.'”
But he soon realized his mistake – but unfortunately, so did Jimmy Buffett:
“He starts telling this story in high school when he picked up the guitar for the first time. And I was like, right to his face, ‘No way! Warren Buffett plays the guitar?’
And his face went from smiling ear to ear to not smiling at all. And then he got tapped on the shoulder because he had to go sing ‘Margaritaville.'”
Travis says that Jason doesn’t let him live that one down, and often sets him up to tell that particular story. But his brother’s not the only one amused by his face blindness: His fiancée Taylor Swift also recalled a story once of Travis being unable to recognize yet another celebrity.
According to Taylor, Travis was attending a show on her Eras tour and she told him that his favorite director, Greta Gerwig, would be in attendance as well.
After the show, Travis recounted to Taylor his experience meeting Gerwig, and dropping a joke about her Barbie movie that she apparently didn’t find particularly amusing. And he also noticed that Gerwig was spending much of the evening dancing with actor Hugh Grant, so Travis found some other friends and spent the evening dancing with them.
Well after the show, videos began going viral of Travis dancing with Gerwig during the show, and Taylor finally was able to piece it together: Travis had mistaken Hugh Grant’s wife for Greta Gerwig, and dropped the Barbie joke to the wrong person – which is the reason it didn’t land. Gerwig, meanwhile, was the friend he had made and hung out with during the show, though he had no idea who she was until afterwards.
