Didn’t like Wendy’s joke, eh?
Katy Perry and the other women on the Blue Origin mission are still receiving backlash after their successful launch into space. On Monday morning, Lauren Sanchez, who is engaged to Jeff Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin, led a mission with the first all-female crew in 60 years. The crew tested redesigned space suits that are more flattering to the female figure.
We’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it, but I think I’d be more concerned with the space suit being functional versus fashionable, and the general public would agree.
After the successful mission, Katy Perry quickly became the meme of the mission, with many making fun of her for kissing the ground after exiting the capsule. After the landing it felt like everyone was getting in on the action poking fun at Perry, even coorporations chimed in on the moment including the fast food chain Wendy’s.
Wendy’s commented on a post of Perry in her space suit, asking:
“Can we send her back?”

Wendy’s social media account is notorious for posting sarcastic jabs and making the most out of viral moments. They even posted a clip of Katy Perry kissing the ground and put a spin on her “I Kissed A Girl” lyrics to capitalize on the moment.

While I read the initial comment and saw the meme, I didn’t think twice about it. Apparently, it really offended Katy Perry. A source close to Katy Perry and the space team told Page Six that she was highly offended by Wendy’s asking to send her back to space, calling their posts “disrespectful” and “blatantly inappropriate.”
“We understand the internet loves a joke, but there’s a clear difference between humor and targeted hostility and this wasn’t harmless banter.
This was a billion dollar brand using its platform to publicly demean a woman …Wendy’s didn’t make a joke — they made a choice. Their recent posts were not only disrespectful, but blatantly inappropriate.”
The source said that the company needs to apologize to Perry.
“Wendy’s may think they’re being clever or witty, but what they’re really doing is feeding a culture of online bullying that everyone agrees has gone too far.”
Page Six reached out to Wendy’s for a comment, and they said that they meant no harm by the posts and have nothing but respect for Katy Perry and the other women who were bravely launched into space.
“We always bring a little spice to our socials, but Wendy’s has a ton of respect for Katy Perry and her out-of-this-world-talent.”
Nice word play there, Wendy’s.
However, the source doubled down on the message that a post like this from a billion-dollar company is very inappropriate and took a jab at Wendy’s, which features a young girl as the face of its brand image, saying it’s a bad look to make comments like this.
“When billion-dollar brands join in, it’s irresponsible. They’re not adding to the conversation, they’re dragging it down and this kind of behavior contributes to a culture where women are punished for standing out or a woman daring to do something different is a target.
What’s worse is that the face of Wendy’s is a woman, which makes this decision not just hypocritical, but painfully ironic. Everyone expected more from a brand with this kind of platform. Wendy’s should ‘do the right thing’ apologize and do better in the future.”
This response makes Katy Perry and her spokesperson sound like a real Karen…
As Wendy’s and I have said earlier in this blog, this was not a jab at Perry but rather playing into a viral moment. Sure, they could have not made the “can we send her back” comment, but Katy Perry did make this mission seem way more intense than it turned out to be, setting herself up to be made fun of after the fact.
I mean, kissing the ground after an 11-minute mission when we had NASA astronauts stuck in space for 9 months…come on.
This Karen-like response from her source not only shows how butthurt she was by the short comment, but also just added fuel to the fire. I am sure that she will continue to be flamed for this space mission.
