The “D” in the Dallas Cowboys evidently stands for delusional.
There’s nothing wrong with a team or a player having confidence. Sometimes that’s the difference from good teams and great teams. Two teams might be relatively level talent and effort wise, but the team that “believes they can” often triumphs more than the other. However, there is a difference between confidence and delusion… and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott appears to be riding that line.
Prescott, who signed a massive four-year, $240 million contract extension with the Cowboys back in the fall, is catching some heat online for suggesting that Dallas isn’t too far off from Philadelphia… who just won Super Bowl LIX. Is that a crazy thing to say? Potentially. But his initial thoughts on the matter weren’t all that far-fetched:
“I feel like we compete with the Eagles and beat them for the most part when we played them. I don’t want to say check the record when the other guy is holding the trophy right now, so credit to them. They’ve earned it and deserve it, by all means.”
If only Dak Prescott would have stopped talking right there…
All he suggested there was that Dallas has been competitive with them in recent years. Maybe Prescott is saying that when they face off head-to-head, he doesn’t feel like there’s that large of a gap between the two teams? And I know he said to not check the record, but I did a little digging anyways and here’s what I found.
In the last 10 games that the Cowboys and Eagles have played each other in, the total wins by each team are tied at five a piece. Philly has gotten the better of “America’s Team” as of late, winning four of the last six matchups. When you compare the postseason resumes of the Eagles and the Cowboys, you’d find that since 2017, Dallas has made it to the playoffs four times, and only made it past the Wild Card round two of those four times.
As for the Philadelphia Eagles, they’ve made the playoffs seven times since 2017, and they’ve made it all the way to the Super Bowl in 2017, 2022, and 2024. Though they lost in 2022 in excruciating fashion to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, Philly can walk around with their figurative wings spread out knowing that they were crowned world champions in 2017 and 2024.
I don’t know if I would call those two resumes “close,” though Dak Prescott feels comfortable saying that:
“But yeah, (we’re) very close. Especially if you watch the NFC game… the NFC championship. Those two teams are teams that we’ve battled against each and every year a couple of times, and as I said, I feel like we’ve gotten the better part each and every time. To see them in such a dominating fashion, credit to them. It’s our turn and it’s on us.”

As a Dallas Cowboys fans, you’ve got to love the confidence from your multi-million-dollar-man, am I right? Never mind the fact that the Cowboys went 0-2 against the Eagles this year in the regular season, losing by a combined score of 75-13. Is 75-13 “very close”? I don’t think so…
If you’re a fan of any other team though, you’re most likely responding to those “we’re very close to the Super Bowl champion Eagles” comments from Dak Prescott like this:

They’re very close in proximity to the Eagles on the field with them twice a year, but the score isn’t very close.
