When it comes to sad country heartbreakers, he doesn’t miss…
Last week, Riley Green teased a new song on Instagram, playing an acoustic version of an unreleased tune that finds him sad and heartbroken, drinking away his sorrows and trying to move on from a girl and failed relationship.
It’s pretty much in his wheelhouse in terms of it being a sad song, but he does those well, and they’re my favorites, so I’m here for it and already love this song:
“I’m lonely, that ain’t nothin’ new
‘Cuz I every single minute I got I’m spending it missin’ you
Who could blame me for holdin’ on
I’m damned if I pick up the phone
But I’m a little damned if I don’t
‘Cuz right now I’m runnin’ on cigarette smoke
Cheap well whiskey whisin you would come home
But you ain’t here to save me
So this heartbreak can take me
Back down missin’ you memory lane
Blow past sober like a runaway train
There ain’t no doubt about it
This poor heart is nearly drowning
And I’m stuck in this bottle and I got no way out
So what am I supposed to do now”
I’ve said it several times this year, but Riley is writing some of the best songs of his career right now (looking at you too, “Jesus Saves,” and I think this already sounds super solid… fans in the comments section were loving it too, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he releases the studio version sometime early next year.
This one is simple, yet beautiful and classic at the same time, which I find is usually a winning combination… Riley never does too much in terms of getting cute or overdoing metaphors or complex lyrics, but I think that’s what country music should be in so many ways… figure out how to say something relatable and meaningful in less words than more.
And it’s actually a lot harder to do than you’d think…
Check it out, this one’s another winner in my humble opinion:
In terms of new music this year, Riley released his third studio album Don’t Mind If I Do in October, and just won his first CMA Award for Musical Event of the Year for the viral hit he was featured on with Ella Langley, “You Look Like You Love Me,” in November.
He should have been nominated for way more, but there’s always next year, I guess…
Riley will hit the road on his Damn Country Music Tour in 2025, and you can check out the full list of dates below. If we’re lucky, I’d bet there’s more new music coming soon too…
