In what seems like one of the greatest success stories in country music history, Ella Langley’s rise to all-genre superstardom has been one to behold over the past two years. If you’ve been paying close attention within the genre over the years, it was more than apparent that the Alabama native was bound to be a star, catching early buzz with tracks like “Country Boy’s Dream Girl,” “paint the town blue” and “That’s Why We Fight” with Koe Wetzel. With that being said, however, I don’t think anyone could have predicted the world-dominating, record-smashing success she’s had recently.
Launching off the success of her Riley Green collaboration, “you look like you love me” throughout 2024 and 2025, as well as other hits such as “weren’t for the wind,” the Alabama native has become nothing short of a phenomenon thanks to the megahit that is “Choosin’ Texas,” And, in turn, she has captured the hearts of nearly everyone in the country and the world over the past year.
After what can only be described as one of the most unprecedented rises for a song and artist in music history, over the past 11 months, “Choosin’ Texas” went on to become the only country song by a woman to triple up and go #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, Hot Country and Country Airplay charts simultaneously. In case that wasn’t enough, thanks to the success of her sophomore album, Dandelion, which debuted at #1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 and sold 169,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in its first week, Langley became just the second woman in history to hold the #1 album and song in the U.S. simultaneously with a country song/album.
Additionally, she’d capture other records, such as becoming the first country artist in history to hold the Top 2 songs in the United States simultaneously for more than one week, allowing country music to occupy the entirety of the Top 5, thanks to both “Choosin’ Texas,” her Morgan Wallen collaboration, “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” and more.
To cap off her massive year, last week, “Choosin’ Texas” officially stood alone as the longest-running #1 hit in U.S. history with 23 weeks, passing Mariah Carey’s long-standing record of 22 atop the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.
Simply put, Langley has been everywhere. Whether it’s selling out arenas across the country on her own Dandelion Tour and opening up for Morgan Wallen on his potentially record-breaking Still The Problem Tour or scoring collabs with major brands such as American Eagle, Shiner Bock beer, Noyz perfume and more.
Despite this, so many pop stans (and country haters in general), have been on a crusade against Langley, calling her a “one hit wonder” and an “industry plant,” trying to smear her as “MAGA” (despite her never publicly commenting on politics) and using pretty much any other term you can think of to disparage her history-making success.
If you leave any country music circle or take a look at the comment section on social media each time Billboard posts Langley and “Choosin’ Texas” remaining at the top of the charts, you’ll see a sea of these comments filled with what can only be described as nonsensical hate for an artist who has experienced one of the most well-deserved rises to superstardom we’ve seen in country music — and music at large.
Like anyone would, Langley has definitely read some of these flurries of attacks against her over the past few months, and she addressed them at her show over the weekend in Columbus, Ohio, at Value City Arena.
In what has become a bit of a tradition throughout the Dandelion Tour, Langley would take a moment before performing her current Top 10 hit on country radio, “Loving Life Again,” to reflect on her success, the hate she’s received recently and how proud she is of everything she’s accomplished.
She’d begin by addressing how much she’s been put under the needle recently, noting how she’s now being criticized for not only her music, but also the way she dresses and moves.
“I know this. Growing up in a small town — this is saying a lot — I don’t think I’ve ever had more opinions on myself in my life than I have in this last year — the way I look, the way I speak, they way I dress, the way I move, the way I sing, the way I write.
At first, it bothered me; I won’t even lie. At first, I was like, ‘What am I gonna do about this? I don’t know. If this is what I’m singing up to do, I don’t know about this.’ I set out to sing music, and I love to do what I do. But if this is what it’s gonna be the whole entire time, I mean sh*t, I f*****g don’t know if I’m strong enough for this.”
After pondering if she could handle all the unwarranted criticism hurled her way, powerfully, the “Be Her” singer would instead say that she’s proud of everything that the girl “that everybody seems to be picking on” has accomplished over the years.
“But then I really got to think about it, and I started to think about the girl that they’re kind of picking on is the girl that got me where I’m sitting here today. That’s the girl that road in a 15-passanger van night after night after night after night. She rode in a Honda Accord night after night after night, chasing her dream, living on bar food, living on tip jar money.
She didn’t have anything but a dream and the ability to get up and do it every single day. So I’m gonna tell you right now, I am proud of that girl that everybody seems to be picking on a little bit. “
There’s truly no one doing it quite like Ella Langley is right now, and it’s incredible to see her not only carrying the torch for many women in country music, but also being one of the best role models one can ask for in an era highlighted by anonymous trolls and online hate no matter who you are or what you say.
