As if the New York Mets’ abrupt turnaround from the pits of despair wasn’t bizarro-world enough, possibly due to some mystical connection to the McDonald’s character Grimace, their good-weird vibes continued on Monday night.
Between innings in the midst of their sixth straight win, a mariachi band at the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field suddenly broke out into a sick rendition of Creed’s smash-hit song “Higher.” See it for yourself.
The streaming feed of the Mets game just cut to a mariachi band playing “Higher” by Creed during the commercial.

Mets pun intended, you gotta believe something is afoot in the simulation we live in to transform this previously hapless club into a juggernaut that’s climbing the standings at such a rapid rate. That or the universe is breaking team owner Steve Cohen’s way, because the gazillionaire investing as much money as he has should count for something. MLB should just rig everything to make the Mets decently good. Otherwise, all that money — almost $500 million guaranteed in last year’s free agency, for starters — is spent for what, exactly?
If you’re unfamiliar with the whole Grimace connection, the video below should serve as context — and MLB’s official X/Twitter account actually featured the dude in the winning score graphic!
The Grimace Era has officially reached mainstream sports media.

You wouldn’t think New York’s perpetual little brother to the Yankees would have it in them to rally like this while the Bronx Bombers are across the way in The City That Never Sleeps boasting the best record in all of baseball. Sometimes, the IRL truth is indeed stranger than fiction.
Google tells me that Grimace actually originated as a villainous character in McDonaldland who stole customers’ drinks, particularly milkshakes. Rather apropos, considering the Mets are going full Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood on their opponents of late.
There was also that Grimace Shake meme going around a while back. The hook was, if you drank that particular milkshake, you’d meet a violent, untimely end, or lose your right mind. Again, checks out with how much of a tear the Mets are on. The power of Grimace is not to be underestimated.
Not to lose too much sight of the mariachi band paying homage to Creed, though.
This awesome event did take place in Arlington, Texas. The Rangers are reigning World Series champions. Alas, unfortunately for Texas supporters who stuck with the franchise through thick and thin, they’re back to being disappointed this season, as is self-evident with their record six games south of .500. Maybe this whooping the Rangers took from the Mets can snap them out of it, and they can take a page out of New York’s playbook by staging a valiant rally to work back into the AL Wild Card mix.
Whatever happens on the diamond, no notes on Texas’ ballpark entertainment acts. That mariachi band rules.
We can’t not acknowledge how one of Creed’s most iconic performances came in Texas, during the song “Higher” in particular, at the Cowboys’ old stadium pre-Jerry World. As a matter of fact, the Rangers adopted the song as their postseason anthem in their run to the World Series crown. Fans joined in on the fun, too.

No other way to finish this thang than to throw it back to Creed’s Thanksgiving halftime show from 2001.
