You’ve heard of a feud between a coyote and a roadrunner – but what about a coyote and a house cat?
Genetically, a coyote isn’t too far from a dog, and it’s pretty much factual that dogs and cats don’t like each other. That’s usually because they have to share the same home as pets, but this video proves that the hatred happens out in the wild as well.
A California home, or more specifically a California cat, was attacked by an aggressive coyote this past weekend. The pet was standing in the doorway behind a screen door and a baby gate, keeping an eye on the front yard. It wasn’t doing that great of a job though, because the cat never saw the coyote coming.
Cindy Stalnaker, the homeowner and pet parent of “Maddy” the cat, explained to NBC why both the screen door and baby gate are usually in place:
“One of the reasons we like to keep that screen door and baby gate there is she likes to sit on the rug and look out here because we have a lot of bunnies, squirrels and lizards But at night, it’s bunny time, so she likes to watch them.”
As Maddy the cat looked out into the night, a coyote had been keeping an eye on her. When the wild animal figured the time was right, it dashed out from behind the bushes and tried to attack the house cat. Luckily for the feline, the screen door and gate stopped the coyote and likely saved its life.
Stalnaker shared that the coyote wasn’t holding back during the attack, and seemed to be even more aggravated on the follow up attempts:
“He came around just a shot and pow, pow, pow into that metal baby gate. He wasn’t just walking up and (tapping). He backed up on the sidewalk and got a running start.”
Fortunately, the screen door and gate held up against the unhinged ramming by the coyote. After the initial mad dash by the wild canine, the cat got the hell out of there. It might enjoy watching the bunnies go by at night, but something tells me it’s going to be keeping an eye out for some bigger, more threatening animals in the yard from here on out.
