Jelly Roll Doesn’t Believe He Deserves ACM Award For Entertainer Of The Year, Says Cody Johnson Should Win It Instead

Staying humble…

Of course it would be easy for Jelly Roll to be a little cocky these days. The rapper-turned-country star is pretty much on top of the country music world right now, not only with his string of #1 hits like “Need A Favor,” “Son Of A Sinner” and “Save Me,” but he’s also selling out his first-ever arena tour, headlining major festivals across the country, was named the CMA New Artist of the Year and received two nominations at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Yeah, things are going pretty good for Jelly right now.

He’s also nominated for Entertainer of the Year at the upcoming ACM Awards, alongside some of the biggest names in country music like Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, Lainey Wilson, Chris Stapleton and Cody Johnson.

It’s his first nomination for the top prize – in fact, it’s the first time he’s EVER been nominated for an ACM Award. Talk about starting out on top…

But during a recent interview, Jelly Roll admitted that he’s not sure he should have been nominated this year.

“I don’t think I deserve to be in the category. I think I’m there a little bit early, and I appreciate the nod and it means a lot that I got it, and I am truly honored. But I mean when you look at guys like Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs that are selling out stadiums.”

So if he doesn’t think he should win it, who does Jelly believe should take home the trophy?

“Frankly, if I could give the award away myself, I would give it to Cody Johnson.

I don’t think anybody’s going to do more shows than him this year. I don’t think anybody works harder than him. And I don’t know if y’all have ever seen a Cody Johnson live show, but I mean it’s like he’s riding a bull. It’s like he never left. He brings bullrider energy for 90-something – it’s insane to me that he’s in that good of shape.”

I mean, it’s hard to disagree with giving the award to Cody. Not only did he drop a double album last year, but he’s also one of the absolute best live shows in the business – and he’s selling out arenas all over the country despite not having the same push at country radio that some of the other artists in the category have.

But it’s also hard to argue that Jelly Roll doesn’t deserve to be nominated either. Entertainer of the Year isn’t just about commercial success, but also about what an artist does for the genre of country music, and over the last year, Jelly Roll has been one of its best ambassadors. From his charity work to his collaborations with artists from all across the spectrum, Jelly has truly elevated country music with his own success. And that’s kind of what the award is about, right?

Regardless, I won’t be upset if either Jelly Roll or Cody Johnson take home the trophy.
