Well-deserved.

The Country Music Hall of Fame just announced their class of 2024, and it includes two legendary country hitmakers: Toby Keith and John Anderson, along with guitarist James Burton, who was a member of Elvis Presley’s band and has played with artists like Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Frank Sinatra.

Toby Keith’s induction in the Modern Era Artist category comes just over a month after his death, though the committee was already voting on the nominees when he passed. And it’s likely that he would have gotten in either way, not only for his incredible catalog of iconic music but also because he was already at the front of voter’s minds amid his health issues as he battled stomach cancer and the incredible attention he received for his emotional performance of “Don’t Let the Old Man In” at the People’s Choice Country Awards.

And for the Veterans Era Artist category, John Anderson seems like a natural pick (and honestly I’m surprised that he wasn’t already a member). With iconic hits like “Straight Tequila Night,” “Seminole Wind,” “Money In the Bank” and “Swingin’,” it’s hard to find a more distinctive voice in country music. Anderson only notched five #1 hits during his career, which is insane to me, but he’s still recognized as one of the legends of the ’80s and ’90s.

Speaking on the induction, Toby Keith’s family said that it was comforting to know that Toby’s music was continuing to be recognized:

“Toby’s passing left our hearts broken. We miss him so much, but we take comfort that his music and legacy will live forever. Thank you, Country Music Hall of Fame, for helping keep it alive.”

And Anderson said he’s still trying to wrap his head around being a member of the Hall of Fame:

“After several days, I am still trying to grasp the reality of being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. It is one of the greatest honors I could ever receive. My love and heartfelt gratitude goes out to the fans who have supported me through the years, everyone at the Country Music Hall of Fame and all of those who made this possible. I am proud and honored beyond words.”

Toby Keith, John Anderson and James Burton will be formally inducted during a medallion ceremony this October.

Strong group for the Class of 2024.
