That’s A LOT of beer.
Morgan Wallen played Memorial Stadium in June as part of his Still The Problem tour, which was a sellout crowd and one of the first shows held in that venue in Clemson in decades. George Strait headlined it just a month prior, and I was fortunate enough to attend and it was incredible (the nightmare traffic afterwards… not so much, but I digress…).
And since it’s been nearly two months since the show took place, the official numbers are in, and according to FOIA data via The State, Wallen sold over 135,931 alcoholic beverages across the two nights of sold-out shows:
“Clemson athletics reported selling 135,931 alcoholic beverages during Wallen’s two concerts held at Memorial Stadium in June.”
Of course, the concerts generated a ton of money, totaling about “$2.1 million in net revenue from alcohol, food and beverage sales at Wallen’s two shows in Death Valley.”
The total earnings across both nights in terms of Clemson’s total revenues will be well into seven figures, an athletics source told The State. In comparison, when George Strait headlined Memorial Stadium on May 2nd, he generated Clemson about $4 million in total revenue, though he only played one night there.
It just goes to show how much money these kinds of stadiums shows generate, and Morgan played 23 stadium shows in 12 cities this summer, so you can do the math there. I imagine that Wallen will continue to follow this sort of format in terms of touring limited stadiums every summer for the foreseeable future, and even though I’m not a huge lover of stadium shows, it makes a lot of sense from the artists perspective.
You spend minimal time on the road, still get to play for tons of fans, and obviously you make a ton of money in the process. Granted, there’s few artists in any genre that can consistently headline and sell out stadiums, but I don’t think Morgan will have that problem for a very long time, if ever, honestly.
And with the tour being over, Morgan is seemingly turning his sights to a new era of music as he moves on from I’m The Problem, and he told fans during one of the last shows that he’s “been in the studio” working on new music:
“I just had a few weeks off the tour so you all know me, I can’t help but work a little bit. I’ve been in the studio working on whatever’s next.
I don’t exactly know what is gonna be next yet, but I do know that this song that I’m about to play right now is gonna be my very next single and it comes out on July 24th. It’s called ‘Been By Now’.”
He subsequently released “Been By Now,” his first solo release of the year, and I have to imagine that another song or two, or maybe even an album announcement, is coming before the end of the year.
