Since the release of Have A Nice Day, the sensational project by West Texas up-and-comers Treaty Oak Revival, there has been an ongoing debate on social media (specifically TikTok) on the meaning behind the fan-favorite track “Fishnets.”
While lyrics often resonate differently among listeners, songs that detail a story often outline a message the collective can agree on. However, “Fishnets” left two very different tastes in listeners’ mouths about what the lyrics outlined. The debate… is it about a cheating husband or a hooker.
With the opening lines being:
“We’ll he takes off his wedding ring
As she’s taking off her top
And he did that dirty thing with her…”
It seems like it could be about an unfaithful husband. But then the following lines:
“But the worst part of the jobIs in the back of her mind there’s a house with a wife, and she’s tucking kids to sleepWhile she’s breaking up a home that she wanted all along for an hour in the sheets…”
The noting of a job swings the underlying messaging to it potentially being about a hooker. The debate has been going on for a few weeks, so lead singer Sam Canty set the record straight at a recent show.
“It’s a hooker…yeah, you’re right.”
He responds to a fan in the crowd yelling for clarification.
“This next song’s about a hooker. It’s a song called “Fishnets,” y’all know it? Yeah, I don’t care what they say on TikTok; it’s not about a cheating husband. It’s about a hooker wanting a better f**kin’ life.”
Well, folks… there you have it—the true meaning behind the track. The last few lines in the lyrics really solidify Canty’s statement that it is about a hooker wanting a better life.
“She wishes she could go backWishes she could go back to the dayShe had a dream with a dressWhere she didn’t have to wear them fishnets on her legs…”
But that being said, a cheating husband IS a character in the story as well, even if it’s not the main inspiration and message of the song.
