Ice Fishermen Witness Wolf Running Down A Coyote On The Frozen Lake

Wolf chases coyote past fisherman
Ryan Thorburn

This will be a trip this ice fisherman will never forget.

During the freezing cold winter months, ice fishing is a great outlet for outdoorsmen to get out of the house and on the water. But, I highly doubt witnessing a wolf chase down a coyote was the last thing on this person’s ice fishing bingo card.

Wolves are the largest members of the canid family, with adult males weighing up to 145 pounds and measuring up to six feet in length. Adult females are slightly smaller, weighing up to 100 pounds and measuring up to five feet in length.

Coyotes are smaller than wolves, with adult males weighing up to 50 pounds and measuring up to four feet in length. Coyotes have a lean, agile build and are known for their cunning and adaptability.

While wolves and coyotes are both members of the canid family, they have distinct differences in their behavior and interactions with each other. Wolves are social animals that live in packs, which can include up to a dozen individuals. They communicate with each other through a variety of vocalizations, including howling, growling, and barking. Wolves are apex predators that prey on a variety of animals, including elk, deer, moose, bison, and smaller mammals like rabbits and rodents.

Coyotes, on the other hand, are opportunistic predators that will hunt and scavenge a variety of animals, including small mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects. They are also known to feed on fruits and vegetation. Coyotes are adaptable animals that can thrive in a variety of environments, from deserts to forests to urban areas.

In terms of interactions between wolves and coyotes, the two animals are known to compete for resources like food and territory. Wolves are known to kill coyotes, and coyotes will avoid areas where wolves are present.

With that being said, this ice fisherman got to see this competition play out live and in person, as a wolf quickly chased a coyote across a frozen lake in Heyden, Ontario. As you can see, the wolf is quickly gaining ground on the coyote, and although we didn’t get to see the end result in this one, it appears that this one probably didn’t end pretty for the coyote.

Ice Fishing Hunting Dog Hooks A Perch

What a good boy.

These bird dogs need something to do in the off season. And why shouldn’t they resort to our hold-over activity of ice fishing too?

Ice fishing is the bridge to get outdoorsman through the winter. It’s not always our favorite activity, you know, with the needed freezing temperatures and the reduced action, but it still leads to great memories made and the chance to still catch some nice fish.

Hunting dogs are always a special breed… super intelligent and energetic, they’re the goodest of boys when all trained up. And the things they are able to learn are nothing short of amazing.

This good boy was out for a winter day on the ice. A bit of a change up from his normal duties of retrieving. So rather than retrieving ducks, he thought he’d try his hand at retrieving fish.

They rig him up with the line attached to his collar and drop it down into the freezing water.

As soon as the dog feels a tug on the line, he sets the hook. Walking forward, he pulls the line in until the fish plops up out of the ice hole.

Ducks and fish… this boy can do it all.

Parker McCollum Reels In Northern Pike Ice Fishing In Minnesota

She’s a beaut, Clark.

Parker McCollum has a show tonight at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but before had he teamed up with the Outdoors Channel to do some ice fishing on Lake Minnetonka

And he caught a lunker.

But before he brought in a monster, he reeled in something a bit smaller…

Fortunately, he had better luck as the day progressed and ended up pulling is a gorgeous northern pike, a fish I’ve been dying to go after for years, so I’m not jealous at all…

From the looks of Outdoor Channel’s Instagram stories, looks like they had a pretty high tech set up out there on the lake, but regardless, awesome to see Parker getting out there before his show tonight.
