Charles Wesley Godwin is soon to be a household name in country music, and his contribution to the soundtrack of the upcoming movie The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will surely help to expedite the process.
Godwin is hands down one of the most talented up-and-coming artists in the country music genre, and the West Virginia native really established himself with his latest album Family Ties.
CWG has always been a talented songwriter, and this project magnified that when he tackled the personal and transparent topic of family. Though he struggled to figure out the theme for his album for a period of time, once he landed on the idea of family, he knew it was what he meant to do.
Godwin told Whiskey Riff:
“I wrote a whole album about family. It’s real personal to me. I’m singing specifically to my kids and my family and everybody, and there’s nobody quite doing that – for better or worse.”
If you haven’t gotten a chance to listen to it, might I suggest that you do so right after you finish reading this story? The album, in my opinion, acts as a book telling a flowing story. Continuing on with the metaphor, I’ll just say that Family Ties is a hell of a page turner (hopefully that makes sense).
It’s easy to see why that might be when you listen to literally any song or live recording that Charles Wesley Godwin has released. He himself might not think he’s worthy of such feats like selling out the Ryman, but every fan of his out there knows that he deserves every good thing coming to him.
Anytime an artist can command your full attention with just their voice and an acoustic guitar, that’s a great signifier of their stardom. CWG certainly does that with this cover of Gillian Welch’s song “Winter’s Come and Gone,” which will be included in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel.
