It’s absolutely tragic what’s happening in the Middle East right now.

After Hamas launched a surprise terror attack on Israel over the weekend, over 1,200 Israeli civilians and 14 US citizens have been killed thus far. With Israel also launching a counterattack on the pro-Palestinian group in Gaza, the numbers will very sadly continue to climb as things continue to get worse.

Tensions are clearly running high, with the threat of an escalating war in the Middle East, and truly heartbreaking, for lack of a better word, images have been flooding social media. Here in America, it can feel like a helpless situation watching so many innocent victims lose their lives, leaving so many with heavy hearts with no end in sight.

With that being said, Lukas Nelson shared a video on Instagram this afternoon of a song he wrote about what’s currently going on in the Middle East, saying it represents “empathy in the wake of this recent tragedy.”

He added that it gets to the heart of the universal feeling of suffering, adding that it’s “unbearably sad how many innocent people on this planet have been made to suffer for the evil of other.”

Lukas (yes, the son of Willie Nelson) is a brilliant songwriter, and it’s truly a beautiful and touching tribute to the innocent civilians who are casualties of evil in the Middle East. While so much country music is light-hearted and fun, it’s stuff like this that really matters and feels like can maybe bring some form of hope to such a dark and hopeless situation.

Do yourself a favor and check it out:

“This is a song I wrote about empathy in the wake of this recent tragedy. That feeling of helplessness as we watch and pray with broken hearts.

Suffering is universal, and the killing of innocents is never justified. It is unbearably sad how many innocent people on this planet been made to suffer for the evil of others.”

You can read all of the lyrics below.

“I’ve been
Right there where you are
Praying from my heart
Broken as it was

Fire was
Burning homes and cars
Tearing hope apart
Broken as it was

Running for their lives
I watched them try
To find a place to hide

Families torn apart
in Gods own light
To never reunite

Oh I’ve been right there where you are
Praying from my heart broken as it was
Broken as it was

Sirens
Beckon you with song
Back where you belong
Out of your own sight

No one
Knows how to describe
The dying of the light
How hard it is to fight

Shoved back down to life
Onto a knife
Awakened by your pain

One breath at a time
You slowly rise
And stumble through the rain

I’ve been right there where you are
Praying from my heart
Broken as it was
Broken as it was”
