Go ahead and try to tell this man that summer is coming to a close. He’s not going to hear you anyways since he’s too busy enjoying this high-rise of an ice cream cone.
The thing I love about baseball is that there’s so much time during the game that play-by-play announcers and color commentators have to fill. Sure, the MLB figured out a couple of ways to shorten the games, but there will always be enough dead air that causes the broadcasters to get creative.
That’s exactly what happened in last night’s game between the Atlanta Braves and the Colorado Rockies, and if there was some sort of end-of-year award for moments like this, these announcers giving a play-by-play while an old man goes to town on his ice cream cone should win the gold.
Going into the top of the 8th inning, the broadcast came back from commercial break to reveal the camera getting a shot of the star of the night: this Braves fan eating his ice cream cone. Though the Atlanta team was winning 3 to 1, this man was so wrapped up in his cone that he couldn’t care less about the game.
As the baseball fan strategically worked around the ice cream, and is even handed a napkin at some point by someone standing next to him, one of the announcers says:
“Boy get yourself somebody that looks at you the way that man looks at that soft serve.
They might need to get a hotel room…”
For those Arrested Development fans out there, let me quote the cult-classic TV show by saying that this man was “having a love affair with that ice cream.” I love that it’s actually a pretty close game and the broadcasters are absolutely mesmerized by the man and his frozen snack.
The camera finally cuts away from the man and back to the game, but only for a moment. The Rockies pitcher throws a strike to Braves catcher Sean Murphy, and as the batter gets set back up in the box, the camera crew cuts again to the man eating his ice cream cone.
They reference the Corey Hart song “Sunglasses at Night” since the man is, in fact, wearing his sunglasses during the night game. As they are playfully discussing the song, and how the fan is “pulling it off,” the Sam Elliot look-alike proceeds to shove the entire top of the cone into his mouth, prompting the announcers to respond through their laughter:
“Oh boy! Geez, don’t leave anything to chance sir. I think I’m done for the night. That escalated quickly.”
Leave it to baseball to be in the most exciting part of the competition, and a man in the stands eating an ice cream cone gets more attention. Take a look at the hilarious video below:
