Who knew that one of the biggest hits of 2023 would be a song from 1988?

Luke Combs dropped his cover of the Tracy Chapman classic “Fast Car” on his album Gettin’ Old earlier this year, and the song has been an absolute monster ever since.

The song has already been streamed over 435 million times, and has gone double platinum in just the five months since it was released.

Luke’s cover has also already hit the top spot on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, and is sitting at #2 on the all-genre Hot 100 chart, behind only Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night.”

The song also currently sitting atop the Hot AC (adult contemporary) chart, and is the first song ever by a male solo artist to top both the Hot AC and Country Airplay charts.

Just an insane run for the new version of 35-year old song.

And now, Luke’s dropping a live version of the track.

The live version, which was released on streaming platforms over the weekend, was recorded during Luke’s show at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis earlier this year, and features Luke calling Chapman’s song one of his favorites of all time.

For her part, the notoriously private Tracy Chapman has embraced the song’s renewed success thanks to Luke’s cover, releasing a statement to Billboard earlier this year:

“I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there.

I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car.’”

Gotta think this “Fast Car” isn’t going to be slowing down any time soon – and the live version is just as good as the studio version.
