Yellowstone has, of course, been a massive hit for Paramount +, and they look to continue to expand the TV show’s umbrella of spin-offs with this upcoming new anthology series Lawmen: Bass Reeves.

The existing spin-offs of Yellowstone have been successful, which leads the network to continue to explore the expansive Yellowstone universe.

1883 explored the beginnings of the Dutton family, which featured Tim McGraw and Faith Hill playing the family patriarchs. 1923 leaned on the services of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren and continued the Dutton family story.

This new show, which was originally titled 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, started out as sort of a “spin-0ff inside a spin-off (spin-ception)” attached to the original 1883 story.

Now, the show will instead be called Lawmen, and act as an anthology series where each season is dedicated to different lawmen icons across history.

The show is currently filming in Texas and not only is it going through some name changes, it’s also adding a very well respected actor into the mix.

Donald Sutherland, who is an honorary Oscar award recipient, has signed on to play a role in the upcoming first season of the anthology series based around Bass Reeves.

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan will be executive producing the new project, while Chad Feehan will be directing.

Deadline reports that Lawmen: Bass Reeves will feature a storyline that brings alive the old outlaws and legendary lawmen of the wild west.

It’s main character (at least for the first season), Bass Reeves, who will be played by David Oyelowo, is described as:

“Reeves, known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded.”

Sutherland is set to play Judge Isaac Parker, a powerful judge at the Fort Smith courthouse.

The rest of the cast is rounded out by regularly occurring Forrest Goodluck, Lauren E. Banks, Barry Pepper and Demi Singleton.

Dennis Quaid, Joaquina Kalukango, Lonnie Chavis, Justin Hurtt-Dunkley, Rob Morgan, Ryan O’Nan, Grantham Coleman are all set to have recurring roles, while Garrett Hedlund and Shea Whigham are expected to be guest stars in the show.
