Colin Stough Fires Up American Idol Crowd With Chris Stapleton’s “Midnight Train To Memphis”

Colin Stough

This kid is on fire.

The top twenty-six contestants threw down their best performances this week, continuing to hope to be the next American Idol.

Colin Stough is still in the running and laid down a damn good version of The SteelDrivers/Chris Stapleton’s “Midnight Train To Memphis.” Stough knows that southern rock is his sweet spot and fully embraces that sound, previously covering “Stone” by Whiskey Myers.

His cover more closely follows the sound of Stapleton’s re-recording of the tune on his album From A Room: Volume 2. Both versions feature Stapleton’s unique vocals, but the rock roots from his solo version feature heavy electric guitar riffs that Stough carried over into this version.

During the performance, you can see the judges in awe. Luke Bryan turns to his counterparts with a look of shock, in a great way, and when Stough hits the first chorus, Katy Perry yells:

“Come on!”

The camera also pans to Noah Cyrus rocking out in the crowd during the tune.

At the song’s end, he gives a tender shout-out to his mom, who encouraged him to make his way onto the show.

Colin Stough is bringing rough and rowdy country to the hit TV show, and I’m here for it.

Given he said on a previous episode he’s never performed for crowds prior to this… you would have never known. He is a natural on stage.
