Terrible news out of Starkville today.

Mississippi State University head football coach (and national treasure) Mike Leach has been hospitalized after suffering from an unspecified personal health issue at his home in Mississippi on Sunday.

The university released a statement saying that they would have no further comment on their coach’s health at this time, and that their thoughts and prayers are with Leach and his family.

“Mississippi State University Head Football Coach Mike Leach had a personal health issue at his home earlier today (Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022). That issue led to a decision to transfer Coach Leach to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson by ambulance.

That is the extent of information that MSU has available regarding Coach Leach’s condition, and the university will make no other comment at this time other than to say that the thoughts and prayers of the university are with Mike and Sharon and their family.”

While it was reported that Leach was taken to the hospital by ambulance, Robbie Faulk with 247Sports reported that Leach was actually airlifted to the the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

He later added that Coach Leach “needs a miracle”:

The Bulldogs are currently preparing for their appearance in the ReliaQuest Bowl, where they will face Illinois in Tampa on January 2, 2023. The university announced that defensive coordinator Zach Arnett will take over for Leach until the head coach is able to return.

In the meantime, prayers and well wishes have been pouring in from all over for one of the most colorful characters in college football, one known for his obsession with pirates and his interviews that often turn into instant classics.
