As long as she got through it, that’s what counts.
Carly Pearce released her fifth studio album Honest Woman on August 28th, It’s truly a work of art and one of her best yet. When you use a title like that for a record, you better be really ready to bare your heart and soul, and Carly has never been afraid to share the truth.

There’s some great stuff on there, and in keeping with the “honest woman” theme of the new music, Carly played a game of “Sip or Spill” during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, and she definitely didn’t hold back.
In fact, when asked if there was ever an event or gig she cancelled because she was “too drunk” to perform, she didn’t sip… she spilled, saying she had never done that, but she definitely “should have.” She even revealed which concert it was, saying she “overserved” herself before a show at the Hamilton in Washington, DC, on in 2021 as part of her 29 Tour.
She admits she knew it wasn’t going to be good before she went on stage, but as the old saying goes, the show must go on and she got through it somehow:
“No, but I should have. I know exactly the show. If you were at my show on the ’29 Tour’ a few years ago in D.C., I overserved myself, and I was like, ‘Uh oh, this is not gonna be good.’ But I made it.”
It’s a situation I imagine lots of artists have been in before, perhaps most even in country music. Although, I’m not sure how many of them would actually admit to it.
There were no crazy videos or anything like that to come out of the show, so I imagine fans probably couldn’t tell, and for her, perhaps a good lesson learned.
Carly also shared about the worst first date she ever went on, which ended with her date getting so blackout drunk that she had to drive him home, and it ended even worse than that:
“I once went on a date with a guy who got so blackout drunk that I had to drive him home, and when it was ‘time to kiss me,’ he pretended to have a phone call. But I could see his lock screen — where there was no call. Just tell me you don’t want to kiss me. I don’t want to kiss you either.”
She also revealed that there is a song she wished she never recorded… and that would be her duet with her ex-husband Michael Ray, “Finish Your Sentences,” joking that she song “didn’t age well”:
“‘Finish Your Sentences’ with Michael Ray. Honest woman. That didn’t age well. Whoops… Oops… Sorry.”
They didn’t exactly have a cordial divorce, so that’s pretty understandable.
In terms of her admitting she should’ve canceled the concert, Carly is an artist who tours a lot and I’ve rarely, if ever, heard of her canceling any shows last minute, and I think we’ve all probably been there once or twice in terms of drinking more than you should. The difference though, most of us don’t have to get up on stage and perform under those circumstances.
I’m impressed she could power through and still remember all the cues and keep the show together.
Speaking of Carly’s live shows, somehow I’ve never seen her in concert so she’s still on my bucket list, and she’s actually kicking off her Honest Woman: Up Close tour tonight, which runs through October and includes limited stops in what will be a more intimate setting than her usual shows.
