Raccoon Living Beneath Citi Field Stands Goes Viral Stealing Peanut Shells & Hot Dogs From Mets Fans

Racoon Citi Field

This new trash removal system that Citi Field installed for fans in the stands really works… but it looks a whole lot like a hungry, wild raccoon.

Baseball’s regular season is slowly but surely coming to a close. There’s a little over a month of baseball left before the post-season starts up in late September and October (nothing like some high stakes October baseball), and a number of teams are currently fighting to make it to the post-season and attempt a World Series run.

One team that doesn’t have to worry about baseball in October? The New York Mets.

The Metropolitans currently have less than a 1% chance of moving on past the regular season, and in this viral video below, it’s clear that even fans inside their own stadium would rather watch a raccoon scrounge around for food in the stands than take in the action happening out on the field.

That’s not some sort of obscure saying or phrase… that’s actually what played out earlier this week at Citi Field.

Baseball fans were just participating in America’s past time, drinking beers and cracking peanuts, when one person in the stands realized that their discarded peanut shells were disappearing. Upon further investigation, it became clear that the peanuts were actually being pulled down into the area below the stands by… a small, black and grey hand.

The entire row became mesmerized (and stopped paying attention to the game) when they realized that a raccoon beneath their seats – and beneath the concrete – was reaching its tiny little hand up through a hole and pulling down whatever it could. For the most part, it was the peanut-shell-fishing that offered up the most return for the little guy.

Mets fans started helping the raccoon out by flooding the area immediately around the hole in the ground with peanut shells, and the Citi Field raccoon went to work:

Absolutely hilarious.

Since that video was taken some 24 hours ago, it’s garnered hundreds of thousands of views and been reposted by countless social media accounts. The Citi Field raccoon is the definition of “going viral,” and those in the comments absolutely loved the work of the resourceful critter:

“He’s a raccoon that found a glitch to unlimited peanut shells.

“That little trash panda would love some pizza.”

“Give him whatever he wants.”

“Citi Field is a wild place.”

“I need to know what seats those are, I wanna feed him all the glizzies.”

“Pour a $30 beer and a glizzy down there. He’ll be good for the game.”

I’m not so sure about pouring beer down the hole, but funny enough, the raccoon did get itself a hot dog at some point during the game.

This other video (that hasn’t gone viral but should) showed the person sitting right by the hole stuffing a baseball stadium “glizzy” down for the raccoon to enjoy:

Safe to say the Citi Field raccoon (or raccoons?) is well fed and well taken care of.

And what’s crazy about this footage? The home of the New York Mets was just recently voted as the Best in America for Food. Now I’m just imagining that it was a whole bunch of raccoons that took place in the survey to give that title to Citi Field?
