Best part of this whole video might be Hellebuyck saying “How you doin’ Don?”
President Donald Trump called the Team USA men’s hockey team immediately after winning the gold medal today – and offered them a pretty special invitation.
I’ll admit, I hadn’t watched a minute of the winter Olympics until this morning when I turned on the gold medal game between the USA and Canada, but since then I haven’t been able to stop watching the highlights and the celebrations – and trash talking all the Canadians who are whining and still trying to talk crap on social media.
Sorry Syrupeans, this is our day.
The Canadians had Team USA on their heels for most of the game, but a lights out performance from goalie Connor Hellebuyck helped the Americans send the game into overtime. And during 3-on-3, Jack Hughes became an American hero by scoring the game winner after losing two teeth earlier in the game.
Just an incredible effort from this group all the way around to bring home the gold medal in hockey for the first time in 46 years.
After the game, FBI Director Kash Patel was even celebrating with the team in the locker room, throwing back beers after being invited by the boys to join the party.
What a scene.
Well while Kash was visiting with the team, he dialed up a close friend of his who wanted to talk to them as well: President Donald Trump.
Kash put the president on speakerphone to address the team, and you could hear the pride in Trump’s voice as he congratulated them and praised Hellebuyck for his performance:
“By the way, your goalie played not bad. I have seen hockey goalies have slightly worse games than him. It was unbelievable, and you were all unbelievable.”
Trump then seemingly decided on the spot to offer them an invitation to his upcoming State of the Union address, which will be this Tuesday, February 24:
“I just told my people, two minutes ago, I didn’t know they’d be calling, I said, ‘We’re giving the State of the Union speech on Tuesday night.’ I can send a military plane or something, but if you would like to, it’s the coolest night, it’s the biggest speech.”
The team cut the president off to tell him that they were all in, and Trump assured them that he would make sure they would be there:
“The nice thing about being president is, I can tell you, you don’t have to worry about the weather or landing…
If you could work that out, I’d be happy to have you.”
Kash promised the team that he was “f—ing on it” and would make sure the team was in Washington on Tuesday night – but it seems like Trump is especially excited to meet one team member in particular:
“I’m gonna shake hands with everybody, but I gotta shake hands with that goalie.”
Seems like the boys are pretty pumped to be at the State of the Union. And there’s no doubt that even Trump is going to be a little starstruck when he gets to shake hands with Connor Hellebuyck.
