Those on-again, off-again relationships really do take a toll on you.

I am sure at some point, everyone has or will experience a toxic relationship in which you know it’s not serving you, but you always seem to find yourself going back to this person. Kolby Cooper perfectly sums up the feeling of being stuck in one of these “situations” in his new single “Hate You Too.”

Over the last year, the East Texas native has been working on elevating his sound, incorporating more elements of rock and roll and grunge. In 2023, with the release of “Hello From The Road” and “Kill Me” and other singles, fans fell in love with what they were curating in the studio, and he’s making sure he’s still evolving that sound in 2024 with the new music he’s pushing. “Hate You Too” is Cooper’s second original release of this year (he shared a cover of Little Texas’ “My Love” in February).

Following up his last single, “Mama,” with “Hate You Too,” is a perfect continuation of his ever-evolving sound.

“We wanted to write a song that hit the line of ‘is this a toxic love song or a breakup song.’ I’m so happy with how it turned out; getting to add grunge elements to what I do is always exciting.”

The lyrics of the relationship highlight the love-hate relationship between a couple and the narrator’s realization when they realize their love interest is slightly (or more than slightly) unhinged. Throughout the lyrics, the narrator points out flaws but follows that up with a rush or something that gives them butterflies, like it could be love and not a toxic situation.

“Yeah, I get you hot like a two-dollar pistol
Holding you’s half of the rush
The heat from your eyes can burn me sometimes
When you put the fire in my blood
I hate you, too
The way you blame the planets for your own bad mood
The law should lock you up for how you drive
The truth is you don’t know the half of what you put me through
I love you, baby, never say goodbye, no…”

The commanding first notes of the song captivate listeners’ attention before amping up the melody to a full-throttle country-rock yet grunge-infused beat. It’s addicting on all fronts, and the song keeps listeners’ on their toes as the melody matches the highs and lows that Cooper sings throughout the lyrics.

Kolby Cooper always brings the heat, and this song is no exception. Fire it up.
