Alright, the NFL is really living up to its “No Fun League” nickname with this latest fine affecting San Francisco 49ers star fullback Kyle Juszczyk.
Fans of football have come to expect celebrations. A player gets a first down? They are gonna follow that up with some sort of emphatic point down the field. A running back or wide receiver gets into the end zone? Get ready for a signature dance of some sort. And if a defense gets a turnover? Those might be the most extravagant of the celebrations, and tend to be rather complex and group-oriented.
For San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who is single handedly helping to keep the FB position alive, he likes to keep things simple. Or at least he thought. After last weekend’s game, he was hit with an almost $15,000 fine by the league for… pretending to chug a beverage.
“NFL fined 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk $14,926 for engaging in an offensive demonstration Sunday vs. Miami. ‘Your imitation of chugging a beer constituted an offensive demonstration and could reasonably be construed as being in poor taste,’ the NFL wrote in its fine letter. Juszczyk, nicknamed ‘Juice,’ already has appealed the fine.”
Oh the humanity.
How many beer commercials were ran during the course of that game? 15… 20? How many beers were sold at the stadium that day? 20,000… 30,000? How many teams in the NFL have a signature can with Bud Light? Over 2 dozen? The hypocrisy knows no bounds…
I understand the NFL cracking down on celebrations that might connote violence. But telling a guy he can’t act like he’s chugging a cold beverage? That’s where I – and many other NFL fans – draw the line:
every commercial during NFL games is for drinking and gambling, but a guy can’t chug a metaphorical beer?

And there’s some validity to that argument actually. Juszczyk has actually celebrated this way his entire career, and has never been fined by the NFL for doing before. Adam Schefter clarified that in a follow up post, and even mentioned that Juszczyk doesn’t drink beer.
The 49ers fullback responded with this:
“Can’t make this stuff up.”
Guy that doesn’t even drink real beers get fined by the league for acting like he’s drinking a fake beer.
Come on NFL… let’s be real, and let’s allow Juszczyk to win his appeal. If he doesn’t win, it looks like plenty of beer brands are willing to cover the $15,000 fine on his behalf. Guess it’ll be a no harm-no foul kind of thing, but I do wonder if the 49ers fullback will have to rethink his signature celebration.
