Nicholas Jamerson is known for talent as a songwriter and storyteller, and he’s choosing to share his keys to success with others that are aspiring to be songwriters themselves.
The country singer stopped by the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast to talk about the culture of Eastern Kentucky, how the music history there is rich, and explained that there are more artists from the area than people realize. Jamerson also detailed how he’s been writing a song a week for the last three years, and why he’s trying to release fewer songs at a time to better suit the modern day consumer’s attention span.
Later in the interview, the “Linda James” singer talked about being process driven over product driven, why he loves it when bands like Ole 60 cover his songs in concert, how he documents his life and his children’s lives differently than most people, and his decision to step in as a soccer coach for his kid’s team… and why he’s workshopping bringing a banjo to the soccer practices.
Any Nicholas Jamerson fan knows that he’s one of the best songwriters in all of country music. He has a way with evoking emotion with his songs, and most recently showcased that with his song “Goodbye Brother.” The subject matter of his songs is often inspired by real life events, but he did tell us that he likes to bounce back and forth between fictional and non-fictional songwriting:
“It’s a little bit of both. I think I always reserve the right in songs to have fiction. But it’s usually based on something real, emotionally anyway. It’s a mix of both.”
And when it comes to his process, he’s not keeping it a secret. In fact, he’s letting plenty of others songwriters into how he approaches the art.
Coming from a family of educators, Jamerson has appreciated the full circle-ness of getting to lead others in songwriting through songwriting workshops. Through them, he’s providing a way forward for them, and letting them know that sometimes the best song is the simple one:
“I teach a lot of workshops. That’s one thing that I always try to tell people is that, at the end of the day, you just need to write the song that’s in front of you. It can just be observational, of what’s happening. I think so many people want to be poetic and profound. But I think sometimes the most profound stuff is what’s happening right in front of you.”
