This elk in Colorado nicknamed “Smash” is certainly living up to its moniker.
We’re currently right in the middle of elk rut season, so it’s no surprise that this sizable elk tried to take on a moving vehicle. It’s normal for bull elk to be more aggressive and vocal from September to November. That’s generally the time of the year when they start “acting up,” and it’s all just to establish dominance and hopefully secure a female mate.
The bull elk in this video captured by “Colorado Wildlife Photography” evidently doesn’t care who he has to take on to impress the ladies. A person getting too close? No problem. Another bull elk cramping his style? He’ll happily clash with him. A golf cart that drives by in a non-threatening way? You best believe it’s gonna get the antlers.
The footage below appears to come out of Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s estimated that over 280,000 elk live in Colorado, which is enough to give the state the honor of housing the largest concentrated population of elk in the world. That type of population brings in tourists from all over the planet, and one of the more popular places you’ll find elk and tourists sharing space is near Rocky Mountain National Park.
Estes Park, Colorado kind of acts as a home base for the national park. Elk are almost always moving through and around the city limits, and herds occasionally take over Estes Park. The people that call the town home are often witnesses to elk-on-elk encounters… or in more unique cases, elk-on-golf-cart battles.
One bull there named “Smash” (A.K.A. “Smashy Smash”) absolutely despises golf carts, and has historically gone out of his way to chase down the small vehicles. As you’ll see in this video below, people in the area have even started rooting for him to actually get the golf cart:
“Get him!”
Smash really doesn’t care for golf carts, eh?
Funny enough, he’s somewhat of a serial smasher, and has been going after golf carts in the area for years. It doesn’t appear that he made contact with the golf cart in this particular video, but in the past, he’s really done some damage to golf carts. Makes you wonder if the person driving that thing around should request an upgrade to a UTV or at least something with some doors on it.
This elk named “Smash” really seems to live for the rut season. He’s apparently wild throughout much of the year, and that behavior only gets amped up when he’s officially trying to show off for a future mate. If you need more proof, here’s what I guess you could call a highlight reel of “Smashy Smash” going after anything and everything that gets near him. Colorado Wild Photography described his antics like this:
“This bull is always entertaining. He is an absolute blast to watch in action! You just never know what Smashy is going to decide is his next target!”
Alright… it’s settled. Smash is my favorite elk in Colorado.
