Two mothers, one human and one moose, trying to protect their littles ones made for quite the dangerous (and entertaining) encounter in Big Sky, Montana.
I don’t have to sit here and tell you (the reader) about the power of a mother. They’ll stop at anything to keep their kiddos safe, and in this video, a dog mom and a moose mother got into quite the face off. It appears the woman had let her dogs out in the yard, and didn’t know that a moose and its calf (or calves?) was right around the corner.
It didn’t take long for the mama moose to see the animals and their owner as a threat.
You may think that this moose was being overly protective, but that’s just the moose’s motherly instincts kicking in. A moose typically cares for and protects their calves for up to a year, and this one was still in need of protection. So the mother thought it would be in the best interest of the people and dogs in the area to clear out.
When the Montana woman noticed the charging moose, she a) understandably freaked out and b) told someone off camera to get inside:
“Oh my God. Get inside. GET INSIDE!”
The woman’s instinct was to try and scoop up one of her smaller dogs, so that it didn’t get trampled by the moose that was running in their direction.
Could the moose have done some damage? Oh, you bet. Moose are the largest of all deer in the deer family, and their height and weight might surprise you. Males are typically bigger than females, but both are still larger than you might think. On average, a female moose usually stands at 5 to 6 feet tall at their shoulders, and can weigh anywhere from 800 to 1300 pounds.
It wouldn’t take a lot for an animal that size to do some damage to any dog, even the larger ones. But fortunately for the dog owner, she and her furry companions were able to avoid the worst of the moose’s charges. There were a couple of close calls, and the Montana resident did go falling into one of the posts on the porch, but all in all, everyone came out of the incident okay. Even the little yappy one with the survival instincts of a hamster came out unscathed.
And you’ve got to give the woman some credit… she had some bear spray handy, and decided to use it. When the moose got up really close to the porch, she unleashed the power of aerosol deterrent, and it worked like a charm. The moose and its calf went running away, and the woman and her dogs were finally able to dive indoors to safety.
Just goes to show that you’ve got to keep your head on a swivel if you live in an area with large, sometimes-aggressive wild animals. Though it wasn’t an ideal situation by any means, the Montana woman handled the mother vs. mother face-off quite well:
