Attention Johnny Blue Skies fans.
It’s safe to say that Sturgill Simpson has never done anything conventionally. From his long history of switching genres seemingly at will to abandoning his name and being reborn as Johnny Blue Skies back in 2024 upon the release of Passage du Desir, you truly never know what to expect with the “Long White Line” singer.
This year, we saw Simpson embark on his most ambitious release to date with the second album under Johnny Blue Skies (and the Dark Clouds), Mutiny After Midnight.
After a convoluted album rollout, which included Stu briefly “leaking” it in its entirety on YouTube for a week, the record was officially released on physical media as intended on March 13th, and it was glorious. Easily the most ambitious album from Simpson to date, Mutiny After Midnight proved to be his most unique project to date. Being chock full of groovy basslines, extended guitar solos and some of the wildest lyrics I’ve heard in some time, it once again proved why the “I Don’t Mind” singer has remained one of the greatest, boundary-pushing artists of the current generation.
Since its physical-only release, the album was finally released on streaming, along with three brand new tracks, back in June. More importantly, Simpson and Co. announced that Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds were officially setting sail on a brand new tour later this year, aptly titled Mutiny For The Masses, which will stretch across 29 shows in North America in September and October.
The tour kicks off incredibly soon on September 4th at Austin’s Moody Center before finishing at Lexington, Kentucky’s Rupp Arena on Halloween weekend, October 30th. Along the way, JBS & the Dark Clouds will be hitting the likes of Los Angeles’ Kia Forum, Chicago’s United Center, Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, New York City’s Barclays Center, Boston’s TD Garden, Washington, D.C.’s Capital One Arena and many more.
With the tour fast approaching, the “Turtles All the Way Down” singer just announced some major updates on the recording side of things. As what seems to be the usual for Sturgill lately, he will be recording and uploading all 29 shows in audio form on the leading platform for live music streaming, nugs.
More importantly, four key shows, Berkeley (Sept. 15), Denver (Sept. 23), Nashville (Oct. 2) and Lexington (Oct. 30) will be livestreamed on nugs.net, allowing fans to watch the show from home on their computer, mobile, or via the nugs app on Roku, or Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV and other Android TV devices.
In a press release announcing the continued partnership with Sturgill Johnny Blue Skies, Brad Serling, the founder and CEO of nugs, would express how excited he is to allow fans to relive the best moments from each upcoming set.
“Johnny Blue Skies is the kind of artist who reminds you why live music is so special. Every show has its own personality, whether it’s an unexpected setlist, a new arrangement, or a moment that only happens once. We’re excited to give fans more ways to experience those moments, both as they happen and long after the lights go down. That’s what nugs is all about: preserving incredible live music and bringing fans closer to the artists they love.”
Prepare to get your faces melted.
