We’re still a couple weeks away from the long-awaited start of college football season, but I think it’s safe to say we may have just gotten one of the greatest uniform reveals of the season – and maybe of all time – thanks to Tulane University.
Now, am I a little biased because Tulane happens to be my alma mater? Sure. And do I also ride in a Mardi Gras parade every year? Yes. And do I also think New Orleans is the greatest city in the world? Absolutely.
But I think everybody can admit that these are sick.
The Green Wave unveiled the second edition of their “city edition” uniforms, after rocking these bad boys last year:
But I think they may have outdone themselves for 2026.
Of course Tulane is located in New Orleans, known for its annual Mardi Gras celebration (among other things). And this year’s city edition uniforms pay tribute to the long history of Mardi Gras in the Crescent City with the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold, a special Mardi Gras edition of their “Angry Wave” logo, and a helmet that even features a Mardi Gras king cake – and of course, there are beads hanging from each player’s name too.
But in New Orleans, you always get a little lagniappe (which is a Cajun word that means “a little something extra,” or a little bonus). So to really make these the greatest uniforms of all time, Tulane announced that the Green Wave would be suiting up in their Mardi Gras-inspired uniforms on September 12 when Tulane takes on South Alabama.
Now, why is it notable that they’ll be wearing these for the South Alabama game? Well the university happens to be located in Mobile, Alabama.
Mobile considers themselves the birthplace of Mardi Gras, with the first celebration in the city taking place in 1703. But the first recorded Mardi Gras celebration in Louisiana took place in 1699 in Plaquemines Parish, just down the river from New Orleans.
Still, Mobile loves to brag about being the original home of Mardi Gras in the United States, and in 2023 the University of South Alabama ruffled some feathers when they announced plans to slap stickers that read “Home of Mardi Gras” on their helmets when they faced Tulane in New Orleans.
The Jaguars eventually backed down and ended up not wearing the stickers, but apparently the Green Wave didn’t forget…

Oh well. Even if they are the “original” Mardi Gras (which is debatable), there’s no question of which city everybody thinks of when they think of Fat Tuesday. And now, Tulane has the uniforms to prove it.
