Following his DUI arrest over the weekend, Tony Romo has decided to withdraw from a golf tournament in Texas that he almost always participates in.
The 56th M&P Group Texas State Open is set to tee off tomorrow and run through this upcoming Friday. One of the competitors that is often in the field is former Cowboys great and current NFL announcer, Tony Romo. He was signed up to play in the open tournament, but those plans changed after he got pulled over for suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence in Milwaukee this past Friday.
He was pulled over and arrested (and later released) after he failed sobriety tests, according to Ari Meirov:
“Former Cowboys QB and CBS announcer Tony Romo was arrested overnight in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating while under the influence. Romo was pulled over yesterday around 8 pm and taken into custody after performing poorly on standard field sobriety tests. He’s due in court on Sept. 21.”

Some saw that and said, “What the heck is Tony Romo doing up in Wisconsin anyways?” Well, thanks to some sleuths on the internet, we actually found out that the former footballer was up in West Bend, Wisconsin because he was competing in the 125th Wisconsin Amateur Championship.
On the list of pro athletes that are also very talented when it comes to the game of golf, Tony Romo is pretty high up there. He’s competed in a multitude of amateur tournaments, and often plays in celebrity competitions like the Pro-Am at the historic Pebble Beach. One of the tournaments he always plays in his the Wisconsin Amateur Championship, and in this year’s tournament, Romo really struggled.
He finished 35-over-par, and shot an 11-over-par 83 during the final round at the West Bend Country Club.
That led many to believe that Romo may have tried to drown his sorrows after coming in 73rd place in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship. Considering the timing of the events (him finishing his final round at 11-over-par, then getting arrested hours later), that plausible explanation seems to be the leader in the clubhouse, to speak in golfing terms.
The color analyst was set to take his golf talents down to Tyler, Texas this week to play some more competitive golf, but the Cascades Country Club recently confirmed to KLTV that Romo would no longer be playing in the event. He was even supposed to be available for a Q&A session, and that was canceled as well.
When asked for comment by KLTV, the country club hosting the tournament put on by the Northern Texas section of the PGA America had this to say:
“Although we’re disappointed he won’t be joining us, we’re still looking forward to an exciting week of competitive golf.”
The 56th M&P Group Texas State Open tournament has taken place in Tyler since 2018. Romo had previously competed in the tournament nine times, and this year’s edition would have been his 10th. Hopefully he gets everything sorted out and he’ll be able to return to Tyler and compete next year.
