Ever wondered how country music artist Colby Acuff would handle a bear attack? If you strangely answered “Yes” to that question, you’ve come to the right place.
Fresh off the release of his new album, Handmade Horsepower, the country music artist joined the Whiskey Riff Raff to talk about the viral origins of his “Dunk That Sh*t” mantra, the art of meme marketing, why he thinks social media is broken, and shared his thoughts on some of the most talented artists in the genre still not getting the recognition they deserve.
Colby also dove into his frustrations with modern country music, explained why he believes Nashville is still the place to be for aspiring artists, and shared why Handmade Horsepower is the record he wants to be remembered for. He also discussed writing every song on the album himself, the short film that accompanies the project, and the impact artists like Sturgill Simpson have had on his career.
And since Colby Acuff is a proud outdoorsman (when he has the time outside of music), and because he provided a hilarious answer to a moose question last time we talked to him, we went ahead and asked him a weird question towards the end of the interview: If Colby woke up in the middle of the night and there was a black bear in his house, what would he do?
In a very macho manner, the Idaho native said he wouldn’t be too startled by the wild animal being within the walls of his home:
“Where I’m from, all the bears are pretty small. Mostly black bears. We don’t really have grizzlies where I’m from. We have these small black bears, and I’m not really that afraid of them.”
It appears Colby’s fearless “Dunk that sh*t” mentality extends into hypothetical animal encounters.
As to how he would actually handle it, Acuff said that before things got more dire, his first instinct would be to simply get the bear out of the house. And hilariously, the “LIPSTICK ON A PIG” singer brought the conversation back to moose:
“Honestly, I guess you try and get it out of the house. I’d probably shoot it, that’s the obvious choice. But yeah, the bears are pretty small, and a black bear? I’m just not worried about a black bear. If I woke up and there was a moose in my house, I’d shoot that thing immediately.”
Colby Acuff clearly has a deep respect for moose and the size and strength that they have.
We dove even further into the hypothetical and eventually asked the country singer if he’d consider calling the police or animal control. He was happy to tell us that calling the authorities never popped into his head as a solution… and then once again brought up moose:
“(Calling for help) never crossed my mind. All the animal situations I’ve ever had have been mostly by myself in a situation where there’s not help for hours and hours. The moose is the big bad out there, then big cats, cougars and stuff.”
