“No Rest For The Wicked”: ‘Marshals’ Star Says Season 2 Will Pick Up Right After Twist-Filled, Cliffhanger Season 1 Finale

Marshals grave stone

It sounds like fans of Marshals better buckle up for the Season 1 finale.

Despite some criticism, it’s safe to say that the Kayce Dutton-focused procedural drama airing on CBS has been a success. The formula was simple really: take an established Yellowstone character, drop them into a format that has been utilized by networks for years, and see what happens.

CBS was banking on new viewers being able to tune in without feeling like they had to do homework, and Yellowstone fans to just enjoy seeing a beloved character on their television screens again. They were right. The Luke Grimes-led show is tracking to become the most-watched television show of the current broadcast season.

The continued story of Kayce Dutton has been captivating, and the supporting case around the Yellowstone character has also made the show worth tuning in to. Country music star Riley Green had a four-episode story arc that ended in shocking fashion, and Logan Marshall-Green’s character, Cal, is a fan favorite lead of the show alongside Kayce Dutton.

In last week’s episode of Marshals, Cal finally revealed the diagnosis that he got when he went to the doctor earlier in the season. He was told that he has a pancoast tumor, and Marshall-Green told TV Insider that showrunner Spencer Hudnutt really wanted to explore that type of cancer because it’s something that’s “prevalent amongst soldiers.”

As he explained:

“It’s a very interesting tumor. It’s high up in his left lung, and the byproduct is not respiratory. It’s aches and it’s muscular and it’s sinewy and goes right up the neck.”

That’s an issue that’s sure to be expanded on and further explored in Season 2 of the show.

Logan Marshall-Green also provided an update with how far along with the second season they are. After all, CBS has already announced that Season 2 will air in their fall TV schedule, so it was assumed that the cast and crew would be needing to get busy in May to make that deadline.

Sure enough, Marshall-Green says they are rolling into production, and that Season 2 will pick up right where Season 1 leaves off.

“(Marshals Season 2 goes into production this week and) we’re dogging, right out of the gate, about seven, eight pages a day. (The second season will) pick up right where we left off, literally and figuratively. No rest for the wicked.”

As for where Season 1 leaves off, the actor behind Cal says that viewers should get ready for a twist that even he didn’t see coming. When one of the people who gets the scripts before anyone else sees them says that, you know that the twist – or cliffhanger – must be a big one.

The Season 1 finale of Marshals is set to air this Sunday (May 24) on CBS at 8 P.M. EST. Though that’s obviously a bummer for fans of the show, you should find comfort in knowing that the Yellowstone spinoff will return in just a couple of months when it premieres it’s second season this fall.

Networks generally start their fall schedule sometime in September, it’s possible that fans of the show will only go three or so months without seeing Kayce Dutton on their televisions. But before we get ahead of ourselves, there’s still one more episode to go.

Here’s the teaser for the season’s finale episode:
