Seems like it would have been nice to give a returning Yellowstone character a bit more of a heads up, eh?
The highly anticipated Yellowstone spinoff, Dutton Ranch, finally premiered this past weekend. Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler are back in a show that has been described as “Yellowstone Season 6.” And their on screen son, Carter (played by Finn Little) also reprised his role.
As for the rest of the cast, Annette Bening plays a powerful owner of a major Texas ranch named Beulah Jackson. Ed Harris is a man named Everett McKinney, who is described as a kind-hearted veteran who has hung up his guns for a more peaceful life. Australian actor Jai Courtney and country music singer Morgan Wade also round out the cast.
But fans are most excited to see the returning Yellowstone characters, and Finn Little himself was happy that he got to step back into the familiar universe. After all, he joined the cast of the flagship series when he was 14, and now he’s 19 as he returns to his character who now finds a home at the Dutton Ranch.
It may have seemed like an easy decision for him to come back, but he might have preferred to have more of a warning about the spinoff. Little told People that he was informed of Dutton Ranch only a week before it was set to start filming:
“‘Yellowstone’ has been a huge part of my life. It’s awesome… I didn’t hear anything about it until like a week before I flew out (to film). Yeah, it was just like, ‘Hey, it’s happening, hope you’re ready.’ I was like, ‘Oh, alright. Let’s go.’ I was excited. I wanted to see more from Carter. I wanted to keep playing the character, for sure.”
Good thing Finn Little didn’t have anything else going on.
As for what fans can expect out of Carter in Dutton Ranch, the young actor says that there’s a lot of change going on for the adoptive son of Beth and Rip. There’s actually a lot going on for the entire family, which Little says comes as no surprise… since it’s Yellowstone after all, and Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler aren’t exactly the “sit around and do crosswords” type:
“A lot has changed (for Carter) since we last saw him. (He’s) growing into himself and trouble’s brewing. (It) feels like ‘Yellowstone.’ It’s never an easy life for the Duttons.”
Isn’t that the truth?
Early reviews suggest that Dutton Ranch is one of the best spinoffs underneath the Yellowstone umbrella (it’s actually rated a touch higher by critics on Rotten Tomatoes). And in no surprise at all, Taylor Sheridan and the show’s music supervisor, Andrea von Foerster, have continued to make country music one of the main characters of the series.
The first two episodes – “The Untold Want” and “Earn Another Day” – are now available to stream on Paramount+. Weekly episodes will also be airing on the Paramount Network at 8 p.m. ET/PT through July 3rd.
