In case some celebrities missed his rant the first time around, Billy Bob Thornton is once again speaking out against celebrities that talk politics.
The Landman leading man is used to having conversations surrounding the political environment. After all, the Taylor Sheridan hit show he stars in has stirred up a fair share of controversial moments tied in with Republican and Democratic ideals. Thornton has always maintained that Landman doesn’t have a political agenda, and that fans that watch and get upset about the show being pro-oil are a little ridiculous.
I mean… Tommy Norris is an oil fixer. How could Landman ever be anti-oil?
The 70-year-old actor recently sat down for an interview with Howie Mandel on his podcast, Howie Mandel Does Stuff, and the pair talked about being celebrities and the influence that naturally comes with that. Thornton and Mandel were both in agreement that using their platform to talk politics was both useless and distasteful.
They agreed that it’s better to speak more on being human than discussing and pushing political beliefs, and the Landman star once again said that high-profile actors and actresses shouldn’t get on their high horse about politics while at awards shows:
“I think to me, it’s way more important than an actor or an actress or a musician telling people who to vote for. Because it’s like, some guys on the fence and ‘Well “Dash Rip Rock” said it on the Golden Globes, so I’m voting for him?’ It’s like, I don’t know anything about politics. I have no idea.
And the stuff that I believe about it, I don’t want to force it down somebody else’s throat. Because I’m not an expert on that. What I am an expert on is having this s**t (and being me and being human).”
There’s no doubt that fans would much rather hear from Billy Bob Thornton about how he navigates his own life… rather than which box he checks on election day.
Thornton went on to say that he’s kind of out on awards shows in general (he also shared this sentiment when he sat down on The Joe Rogan Experience later last year), and once again stated that everyone in Hollywood should listen to the wise words of Ricky Gervais, who has famously put celebrities in their place over the years:
“I’m not really big on like at awards shows, all of a sudden you start talking about saving the badgers and stuff. Like Ricky Gervais said, you know, it’s like get your little award and f*** off, you know?”
I’m sure Gervais wouldn’t mind if Billy Bob Thornton adopted that saying as his own, if only to continue to spread the message. The Landman star has previously described himself as a “radical moderate,” and feels strongly that his beliefs don’t fit into any political party. And as you’ve read, he definitely feels like political beliefs don’t belong at awards shows.
You can hear Thornton touch on that more in the interview below:
