Luke Grimes Says Fans Get Upset When They Meet Him In Real Life & Realize He’s “Not a Real Cowboy”

He’s not a real cowboy, but he plays a good one on TV… maybe too good.

Luke Grimes, who plays fan-favorite Kayce Dutton, has become a household name through his time on the hit series Yellowstone, and now, he’s staring in a spinoff as Kayce enters a new chapter of his life without his wife, Monica.

There has been some criticism of the procedural drama, overall, it has been a big success, and the show has already been renewed for a second season. And of course, like any Hollywood production, most of the actors who play these characters have no real experience as actual cowboys or cowgirls, though there are a few in the Yellowstone universe who come from that world.

But Grimes, who is from Dayton, Ohio, didn’t grow up on a ranch with a wealthy family out in Montana, though some fans seem to forget that when they see him out in public… during an interview with CHUM 1045 radio show recently, Grimes said that he’s had some strange fan encounters over the years where people have been upset that “it wasn’t real.” He says people have been disappointed to see in real like that he’s “not a real cowboy,” so I guess that’s at least a compliment to his acting skills:

“It can be a mix of things. I think people loved that show so much that they were on a certain level upset that it wasn’t real. Like, they were so obsessed… a lot of times, you’ll get the like, ‘You’re not a real cowboy,’ thing.

Well of course I’m not, that’s why I’m able to do this. If I was a real cowboy I’d be herding cattle right now, I wouldn’t be on the show.”

I get it, the illusion to think there’s a real cowboy out there in the world is fun, but really, people? He’s an actor on a TV show watched by millions of people…

This past weekend on Marshals, we saw Riley Green make his acting debut, and they have already confirmed that Season 2 is set to air this fall, and according to Grimes, they’re going to deliver at least 18 episodes for Season 2, and possibly 20, which will start filming in May:

“In May. No, it’s going to be more than that. It’s up in the air right now, it’s either going to be 18 or 20. They like it.”

Like I said, some fans have complained about the writing and the storyline of the show, but this is just the first season, so I have to imagine the writers and producers will take some of that into consideration for next season, and I think a lot of fans will continue to tune in, if only to continue seeing a fan-favorite Dutton on screen.
