Contemporary Christian artist Brandon Lake continues his crossover into country music.
There’s all of this talk about artists switching over to country (Beyoncé, Post Malone, etc.), yet not much has been said about Brandon Lake. I suppose Christian to country isn’t a huge move musically, but nonetheless, the artist behind the hit song “Gratitude” has been working with plenty of country artists lately – and has even made some country music of his own.
After the positive response to he and Jelly Roll’s collab with “Hard Fought Hallelujah” (which won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song), Brandon Lake chose to continue trusting country music fans to connect with his voice and his music. That’s why he finally put out “When A Cowboy Prays” with Cody Johnson, and over Easter weekend, dropped a song with Lainey Wilson titled “The Jesus I Know Now.”
In the past, Lake has described country music and Christian music having the same DNA, and both being grounded in faith, family, and freedom. That’s what draws him to work with country artists so much, and explains why he brought out Jordan Davis at a recent tour stop of his to sing “Buy Dirt.”
Brandon Lake is currently on his King of Hearts Tour, and this past weekend, while he was at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, he surprised fans in attendance by bringing out the country music singer for a duet. Before they got to it, Lake told Davis how much his song, “Buy Dirt,” meant to him and his wife, Brittany:
“Brittany and I, we moved out of the city, and my life started getting really busy. We put an offer on this house. We had to wait six months to move out there. What I didn’t realize is that that land would heal me in ways I didn’t know I needed healing. Me and Brittany played this song every single day, and this became our anthem. And so I wanted I wanted you to share it with us.”
The song clearly has a special place in Lake’s heart, and Davis was honored to sing it with the Christian artist on stage. Both of them grabbed an acoustic guitar, took a seat on stage, and sang “Buy Dirt” together. And Lake made sure to share the moment with all those who weren’t there that night through social media:
“My boy Jordan Davis wrote one of my all-time favorite songs, so of course I had to have him come sing it on the King of Hearts tour.”
Sound pretty good together… could a Lake-Davis collab be on the horizon?
If you dive into the comment section of that post, you’ll see that Jordan Davis responded with message, which definitely doesn’t rule out a collaboration down the road:
“Awesome night brother, thank you for having me out… Let’s do it again soon.”
And all of the fans in the replies were a) talking about how good the pair sounded together and b) clamoring for the two to release something. Considering fans basically convinced Brandon Lake to work with Cody Johnson, I’d say the Christian artist listens to those types of requests… and a Brandon Lake-Jordan Davis collab could be coming sooner rather than later.
