Ty Myers isn’t afraid to change up his sound album to album.
The “Thought It Was Love” singer recently joined the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast to talk to us about his career blowing up while he’s still a teenager, being the boss of adults at the age of 18, and being called an old soul ever since he started writing full songs when he was seven years old.
Myers also touched on the main demographic of his fanbase being young girls, how every night on tour is a party (and why he sometimes separates himself from it), John Mayer being his number one influence, and the fun fact about where most of his songwriting takes place.
Obviously, our conversation also explored his latest album, Heavy On The Soul, which Myers released at the end of March. If you consider yourself a fan of the young country star, and you’ve listened to both his sophomore album and his debut project, The Select, you probably noticed that the two records sound very different.
That’s an intentional move by Myers, and he’s not worried about whether or not his growing fanbase will mind. The rising star admits that the thought of “Will they like it?” has crossed his mind, but he’s not letting that steer his music making:
“I think about it. It’s like a thought. But I’m not worried about it, because it’s me as an artist. Do you like my album? Or do you like me? So we’ll find out. If you just like that album, that’s great, go spin that album. I’m not going to sit here and make 18 albums that sound the same.”
Myers then used that as a jumping off point to talk about artistry – and the music industry – as a whole. It wasn’t a pointed attack, but it was a mature observation that labels typically just want “more where that came from.” Some artists comply, while others like Ty Myers aim to be creative:
“That’s not artistry. That’s just copying success. You’re not a songwriter. You’re a song-copier of your first song. I have so much influence. I listen to so much music. That first album was just a piece of what I love and what I write. And so is this next one. I would be miserable if I was bound by that.”

It’s truly interesting to think that some fans would prefer for their favorite artist to just churn out the same thing over and over again. Would that be comforting? Sure. But could it be interesting? I’m afraid it wouldn’t be possible. Just as that would be boring for the artist, as Ty Myers proclaimed, you’d expect it to be mind-numbing for the listener as well. Though some artists might just be copying and pasting what works… you won’t ever get that kind of project from Ty Myers.
